One year old & four year old. Home alone. Died. NO EXCUSES!!!
 
Heartbreaking. Just heartbreaking.. Poor babies.. Rest in peace babies..

Fox 2's Randy Wimbley reports the boys were home alone when the fire started. They were in a second-floor bedroom and the fire is said to have started on the lower level. Detroit Police Chief James Craig tells us space heaters were inside the home in the area where the fire started, but crews are still investigating to determine exactly how the fire started.

A witness tells Wimbley he may have seen a person throw something inside the home before the fire started. ......

Chief Craig says what the witness says has "not been determined.".......

Wimbley reports the father may have stepped out to go across the street to get cigarettes from a friend when the fire started.

Detroit Fire Engine 30 was first on the scene on the city’s west side. Firefighters made their way into the house and upstairs, where they found two little boys. Firefighters rescued the brothers — ages 1 and 4 — and gave them CPR before the children were rushed to different hospitals.

The boys, who had been left alone in the home, died. Authorities did not immediately release their names.

Now, authorities are trying to determine what caused the blaze. They’re investigating both the possibility of a firebombing and that the fire was an accident.......more......

There were conflicting reports Friday about the fire, which started at 1 p.m., including what might have happened leading up to the blaze and what firefighters found at the scene.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said one witness reported seeing a man exit a black Ford F-150 pickup with a bucket containing a liquid that he doused on the front of the house moments before it caught fire. Late Friday, Woody said authorities were still investigating the account.

A neighbor, whom the Free Press is not naming to protect the identity of a witness, said he was at home Friday afternoon when he heard the sound of glass breaking and a vehicle speeding away from the scene.

Unthinkable that someone would deliberately start a fire period, but esp. where children live.
 
Here's a video news report. Not much new but the father is shown and interviewed briefly. His name given only as Popa. Said he was gone for 10 min.

I have family in this area and they say houses are set on fire often, for a myriad of reasons - such as houses assumed vacant and dilapidated are burned to discourage crime or squatters; houses that squattters have taken over are burned when the squatters decide to move on; houses that can no longer be afforded are burned down, etc etc.

Seem this fire could be a result of any number of situations (and I am not implying any of the above are on my radar). I know we all hope it was not a deliberate attempt to kill thgese young children.

Dad is arrested on unrelated charges (incl. home invasion); mom is and has been in jail... now they don't think an accelerant was used, could have been a space heater or other electrical issue. One child found under a mattress... :cry:

was he trying to hide from the fire, and stay safe? Were they dead before this happened? No results yet about COD so I guess everything is on the table.

Sorry for you little guys... no christmas for you this year, and TO ME, that is what Christmas is for. Kids. I will keep you in my thoughts this as the year draws to a close. so innocent at those ages, so sad...

Thank you for the update; this is so very horrible and sad. I agree about Christmas being for the kids and the little one might never have even had one. Now that the father is charged, I'm wondering who decided to leave the children with him while the mother is in jail.

mom was picked up for probation violation the day prior. I have seen no quotes attributed to her yet so we have heard nothing about what she knows or thinks, sadly.

I hope this was an accident because the alternatives are not acceptable. But even if it was an accident, why were these kids home alone, even for 10 minutes. They are 1 and 4 years old. I have read many discussions about this before here on WS, and don't want to start a debate about responsible parenting... just want to say how sad this is... whatever it is.
 
At the hospital, we had required fire safety drills. I made sure we had fire drills at home and planned escape routes, and there are fire extinguishers on all floors, garage and kitchen. When I was younger, a classmate's home caught on fire and the babysitter was not able to get to the two little brothers. They were both dead of smoke inhalation. Ages 4 and 2. Needless to say, that family was never the same. My classmate went from being one of three to an only child. Truly tragic. Just like this story. So very sad.
