I'm very interested in this. Do you know when they think he died? What years?
 
Wish there was more information on NamUs. Wonder if any locals have heard anything.
 
I wonder if they're posting them on NAMUS as a cross reference to match them to those that are missing/reported runaways or something for matching up DNA. There has to be some record of those who where there and unaccounted for I would think.
 
Yes.They were probably wards of the state. There should be court house records possibly also HRS social services involvement.

There were over 100 bodies exhumed. It was a makeshift cemetary at a "reform school" that was notorious for abusing the kids who were sent there. The facility had been in operation for more than 100 years, and was just closed down in 2011.

When I first looked at the NamUs report file I was questioning if these remains were of Mark Anthony Degner or Bryan Andrew Hayes, two special needs children who ran away together in Jacksonville, FL back in 2005, but after reading some other resources I now am doubtful these remains are them. Of couse anything is possible, but no. JMO and :twocents:
 
Wow. It's likely they have a good start on ID'ing some of these boys. This is a list of 42 families of deceased boys from Dozier they are looking to get in contact with:

The families they are seeking seem to have had sons at the school who passed between 1918 and 1952, but mostly between 1918 and 1936.

I think I remember reading that being early 20th century Florida the cemetery was segregated and they thought most of these boys were African-American based on where they were buried. Anyone else remember reading that?

this link, from post #4 (thanks MsSuzanne) says that the bodies being exhumed are located near enough to the black living quarters that survivors believe that any white victims are buried elsewhere

I remember reading that, too. I believe it was in one (or more) of the articles on Yahoo news, but I could be wrong about the source. I think there is some debate about the location of the graveyard for white students.

A few points of interest from his blog. It sounds like the students who died in the fire in 1914 weren't the first students to loose their lives there. There is a quote from an October 1906 article written for the Marianna Times-Courier by Frank McDonald --

There have been but two deaths since the institution was started, and of these one came to the school with organic disease of the heart, while the other was recaptured escape, who succumbed, notwithstanding the best of care and medical attention, from the inroads of long exposure at an inclement season.

The identities of the students were not included in McDonald’s article, in which he noted that the population at the school then consisted of 39 boys and 4 girls.

I remember reading somewhere else that the school was coed when it first opened as well, but now I can't find it.

I sent an email the other day to the Palm Harbor Museum requesting genealogy help on Clarence Parrot (also suggested the spelling Parrott), one of the boys on the list. The USF list stated that he was from Sutherland or Palm Harbor and died in 1914. Sutherland didn't become Palm Harbor until the 20's I believe. I grew up in Palm Harbor so I figured I'd try and help put a family to Clarence because it was listed as unknown family.

Anyways, the museum emailed back and here is their response.

"We keep the family trees of the 24 families who homesteaded Palm Harbor around the 1850s. We have them through the 1950s unless someone gave us current information. I do not get any results on either spelling of the name. Sorry"

That's is disheartening that I could not help Clarence.
 
This has me thinking that some of those graves may have been unmarked but there was media reports back then about Clarence and others dying in the fire so I would think that the families would have been notified back then. Why are they saying that he (and possibly others) are unknown/unidentified?
