New Zealand - Paul Arber, 38, Waikato, 8 Dec 2013

    Tuesday Dec 10, 2013

A missing Australian tennis coach seemed "distant and spiritual" before he wandered into the Waikato River in the early hours of Sunday, police say.

Paul Arber, 38, was last seen swimming in the river at 4am on Sunday by a pair of passersby, police revealed this afternoon.

Waikato Field Crime Manager Detective Inspector Karl Thornton said the pair convinced Mr Arber to get out of the water.

This is a weird one. Reports say he was acting strangely. This must have only been a day before he disappeared because I doubt he would have been left in charge of this group if he was acting strangely before this. Surely someone would have noticed. Wonder if he has had other episodes of this prior. His luggagevand passport were found in his accommodation. Well, that's not unusual but his keys and wallet were found in
Cooke st. That is unusual. Where about did they find them? Were they just tossed on the ground. Luckybsome honest person found them.

    Description

"Paul is described by his parents as a gentle, spiritual person who is harmless towards other people," Mr Thornton said.

"He is described as a slightly built Caucasian, 179 centimetres tall (5 foot 9 inches) with short, dark hair."

"He was wearing a grey tracksuit with a tennis logo on the left breast of the top and a Wilson tennis logo on the left shoulder of the top."

"Paul is described by them as a vegan and also will only drink bottled water, so it may be that you see someone looking like they might be in distress, possibly with fruit or bottled water – that could be Paul so please, ask if they're OK and make the call to police."

Missing coach talked of 'warmth' before disappearance

    Wednesday Dec 11, 2013

"Mr Arber called his son "almost perfect" and said he'd never been in trouble with the law and was a happy-go-lucky person who was well-known and respected in the Australian tennis community.

However he said the night before his son left for New Zealand he went to their house and spoke of a "love" and "warmth" he had for people and wanted his parents to share his feelings."

Missing tennis coach Paul Arber 'irrational, psychotic'

    December 11, 2013

"Long-time friend Nathan Hude - one of the last people to see Mr Arber before he disappeared - also shed light on Mr Arberís state of mind on Saturday evening.

He wrote on the "Find Paul Arber" Facebook group page that Mr Arber approached a family in their driveway after 9pm and spoke to them, "offering fruit" and "spirituality".

"Later at around 10pm he spoke to some more people further down [the] street and turning right, near Galloway Park with similar story," Mr Hude wrote. "[He] was seen carrying what were thought to be grocery bags, containing at least the fruit he was offering people."

Missing Melbourne tennis coach Paul Arber was seen swimming in Waikato River at 4am, police reveal

    DECEMBER 10, 2013

"Duty manager of the Eastside Tavern on Grey St, Juan Gregun, said police had established a caravan and were calling for information on Mr Arber's whereabouts.

He said Steel Park had previously been used as a hangout by "drunks and hobos'' but had been cleaned up in recent times.

"At 9pm on a Saturday it's fairly busy at this time of the year,'' Mr Gregun said. "It doesn't get dark until about 9.15.''

The fast-flowing Waikato River, New Zealand's largest, runs nearby. Mr Gregun said several people had come to grief in the past on the river, but usually very late at night."
