Michigan passes ‘rape insurance’ bill


Both chambers of the Michigan legislature have passed a measure banning insurance coverage for abortion in private health plans unless women purchase a separate rider. And because of the way the legislation was put forward, it is set to become law despite the objections of both the state’s Democratic minority and the veto of the Republican governor.

In a charged hearing Wednesday, Michigan Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer told the story of her own rape and called the legislation “one of the most misogynistic proposals I’ve ever seen in the Michigan Legislature,” according to the Detroit Free Press. The fact that women are required to plan in advance to have an abortion, Whitmer said, “tells women who are raped … that they should have thought ahead and bought special insurance for it.”

This state is so backward. Thank God I've had my tubes tied.
 
Why is it the state's business? The insurance coverage is between the customer and the insurance company.
 
Perhaps the women in Michigan should come together and tell the 80% that are men that voted for this new bill that they refuse to have Viagra covered by insurance anymore unless of course there is a special rider for it. The men want to mess around with women's health issues? Fine, mess around with theirs.

I agree 110%!

Also, before they get their Viagra prescriptions, have their doctor mandated to discuss with them their other options - like celibacy, lifestyle changes, injections, vacuum devices, etc. After all, we just want the men to be informed about the decision they're making and how it effects their health. ;)
 
Can you imagine what a woman would have to go thru to prove to an insurance company that they were raped and the fetus is a product of that rape?

I can't even imagine. Especially considering that only 4% of rapists are ever convicted in court.

Goodness, you have enough trouble with insurance companies figuring out who is at fault in lots of car accidents, let alone a situation where someone is accused of rape....

I trust women to make their own decisions about their health and lives. Their decisions may not be the ones I would make, but I am not in their shoes. I wish the legislature would trust adult women - we are capable of making adult decisions!

Would this abortion rider also cover if the mother's life was in danger or there was something terribly wrong with the fetus? Seems like - from a purely numbers perspective- insurance companies would be willing to pay for abortions in these cases, as the medical costs for treating a dying woman or taking on a disabled dependent would be so high and cut into their profits.

And in the meantime, these same people who want to pass this bill are the types (notice I'm not claiming this is them, just from other ridiculous laws in regards to a woman's body) to cut food stamps and assistance. Only the children are punished in those circumstances.

I used to work in insurance and all the group health plans that we had, covered birth control and abortion because it was cost saving for the insurance company.

I know this crap circulating on the internet about insurance rates going up due to having to cover birth control is BS.

This bill they passed is an attack on women and I want to fight back. It's about time they get a dose of their own medicine.

I don't see how they can do this when abortion is legal in this country.

The measure was brought to the legislature by a citizens' petition, signed by 4 percent of the state's population. The Right to Life petition was taken up by the body after Republican Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed an abortion coverage bill last year. Citizens' petitions are not subject to veto by the Governor.

Add to this, I read an article that says insurance companies don't actually offer this "rape insurance." So they want women to purchase something that doesn't actually exist.

Planned Parenthood provides vital services in my community that no one else does. They give low cost or free exams to females, birth control (which lowers rates of abortion), treat sexually transmitted diseases and provide education. These are very, very important services.

These lawmakers and others act as though there is this gigantic number of abortion procedures being performed. When I worked in insurance, hundreds of thousands of medical claims crossed my desk. I also was given claims by another person who refused to process them due to their beliefs. It was rare, extremely rare to see a medical bill for an abortion. I shudder to think what would happen if Planned Parenthood didn't exist to provide birth control and other services.

How many women PLAN on getting raped and pregnant?
None that I can think of.

How is a company going to do this ridiculous thing? Announce at the next employee benefits meeting..."In addition to the extra dental coverage you can purchase, we have a great new benefit for women they can purchase this year. Rape coverage!

Of course it's always soooo much easier to prey on the weak and helpless!
 
I think we are going to experience the dark ages all over again....soon. This entire country is going backwards. Frightening!

Everytime I read something like this story, I'm reminded of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. I first read it back in high school in the early 90s, and thought naively that it could never happen. Speculative fiction maybe, but it's scary how over the years the description of how rights were taken away from women seems to become more and more possible. Scary.
