MA - Harvard University: Reports of explosives in four buildings, 2013

I feel so much sypathy for college students these days. Back in the 70's we students never worried about this kind of thing.

In high school, I recall someone phoning in a bomb threat. It turned out to be a student prank and we all thought it was funny. Not today.

Switched over to CNN, they're covering it live. Reporting that FBI and ATF are there, too, they're taking this very seriously, as they should!

Threat to be a hoax but they're taking it seriously per CNN

CNN: LE says that this appears to be a hoax, but it's not over yet. Still investigating.

I hope they can track that phone call.

Harvard cancels some exams after bomb threat

CAMBRIDGE — The evacuation at Harvard University this morning was triggered by an e-mail warning that explosives had been planted in four buildings at the heart of the storied campus, according to a law enforcement official.

Just before 1 p.m., the university announced that two of the four buildings, Thayer and Emerson halls, a freshman dorm and lecture hall, had been deemed safe. Sever Hall, another lecture hall, and the Science Center remained closed, the university said in a posting on its website.

Thayer, Emerson, and Sever are all located inside the ancient Harvard Yard section of the campus. The Science Center stands just outside the Yard.

According to the school’s academic calendar, final exams are scheduled for this week for undergraduates.

College officials said they were working to identify and reschedule exams that were slated for this morning in the area. Officials also planned to make an announcement about the impact on afternoon exams as soon as possible, a university spokesman said in an e-mail.

Harvard student to face bomb hoax charges

BOSTON (Reuters) - A Harvard University student who told investigators that he had sent hoax e-mails claiming there were bombs planted around the school this week to get out of taking a final exam was due in court on Wednesday to face criminal charges.

The student, 20-year-old Endo Kim, was expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Boston around noon ET (1700 GMT).

Harvard officials on Monday evacuated four buildings, including classroom facilities and a dorm, at the heart of the Ivy League school's centuries-old campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, after receiving threatening e-mails claiming that "shrapnel bombs" had been placed in two of them.

Whatever happened to faking a family emergency when you wanted out of an exam?

Whatever happened to faking a family emergency when you wanted out of an exam?

No kidding! Or faking being sick. This kid is a few cents short of a nickel. :giggle: Ruin your life over an exam.

If convicted, the student could face a maximum of five years in prison, three years of suspended release, and a $250,000 fine.

Kim took several steps to hide his identity, but in the end, it was the WiFi that got him, the FBI said.

Kim said he sent his messages using a temporary, anonymous email account routed through the worldwide anonymizing network Tor, according to the affidavit.

So far, so good. But to get to Tor, he had to go through Harvard's wireless network — and university technicians were able to detect that it was Kim who was trying to get to Tor, according to the affidavit.

This should be dealt with on a very serious level.

Making a bomb threat is way worse than failing the finals. At least failing the finals does not send one to prison.
