GUILTY NJ - Dustin Friedland, 30, killed in carjacking, Short Hills, 15 Dec 2013

This is a very upscale mall (they have a valet)...in a very nice town that is surrounded by some very high-crime towns. I am not sure if this is true, but people I know say that there are more cars stolen from this mall than anywhere else in the state. I feel like something like this (this exact crime...shot while someone steal the car) happening was inevitable at some point, sadly...not that it couldn't happen at any mall.

Ugh. So sad and senseless. The loss of a young life over a vehicle that was dumped later. Find the monsters who did this and make examples of them. I'm sorry, but we have a serious issue in this country with this type of senseless crime and murder and until somebody admits to and does something about it, it will only get worse.

This is my mall, the one I go to shop at when I need something. My son works there as well. He left work at 9:00pm last night. Thankfully he wasn't there when this happened. I always felt safe there. Security was always visable, but I guess they can't be everywhere.

Such a tragedy. This young man was senselessly killed for his "things". There seems to be a "jealousy" issue at work. If I can't have it neither can you seems to be the new thing for those who refuse to work for a living.

It is also disturbing just how many people have feel zero value for human life anymore.

No mention of cameras in the parking deck. Hopefully there are some images of the shooter. Jmo

Stolen-car ring terrorizing tri-state eyed in lawyer’s carjacking murder

The thugs who shot and killed a young lawyer in front of his horrified wife during an apparent carjacking outside an upscale New Jersey mall may be part of a stolen-car ring that’s been targeting the tri-state area in recent months, law-enforcement sources told The Post on Monday.

Dustin Friedland, 30, of Hoboken offered no resistance when the pair of thugs confronted him about 9:10 p.m. Sunday outside his luxury Range Rover on the third level of a parking garage at The Mall at Short Hills in Millburn, sources said.

“It was violent. The victim did not struggle. The perp just shot him in the head,” a source said. “The perps may be part of a stolen car ring that’s been hitting the tri-state the last few months.”

The perps did not specifically target Friedland but were after his silver 2012 Range Rover, worth about $65,000, the source said.

“[It is] believed to be a random attack. No clue as to who they were,” the source said.

There may be a current ring that they're specifically targeting, but there have ALWAYS been carjackings near Newark. Lots of 'em. Maybe this is the first one in Short Hills, though, idk. jmo

Authorities are still looking for two suspects who confronted the couple in the parking garage of the Mall at Short Hills in Millburn Sunday evening. The couple were getting into their 2012 silver Range Rover around 9 p.m. local time when two men approached and demanded the vehicle, The New York Post reported.

Officials say that victim, 30-year-old Dustin Friedland of Hoboken, was shot in the head when he resisted. His wife was not injured, but the men took off in the vehicle, acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said.

Yes, this. Can we just round up all these type of people and ship them off to another planet and let them kill each other??? Really, I've had it with people who take the lives of innocent victims. Claire Davis, in a coma which suggests to me she is brain dead, now this promising young man shot in the head for a Range Rover.

And here is the picture of his beautiful wife who will now be traumatized for the rest of her life.

And more pictures of the once happy couple. :(

Sounds good to me...round them up and put them on an island Battle Royale style. Of course, there are the bleeding hearts who would condemn this a "cruel and unsual" and spout off a bunch of nonsense about the perps homelife, upbringing, yadda yadda yadda.

Shooting a man--who by all accounts was not even resisting--in the head for a car? Ugh. We will continue to live in fear and hear about these types of murders until something drastic is done. May sound harsh, but it is oh so true.

“The victim had opened the door for his wife, she had started to get in the vehicle,” Murray said. “As he got to the driver’s side and started to get ready to enter the vehicle, he was approached by two males and was shot before he entered his vehicle.”

A gentleman opening the door for his wife...

Short Hills mall carjacking victim struggled with attackers, authorities say

The assailants, who were not identified, entered the mall complex in a green sport-utility vehicle, possibly a Subaru, and were caught on video circling the lot, two of the sources said.

Friedland had opened the front door of the Range Rover for his wife, and was trying to enter the vehicle himself when he was approached by the two carjackers, the sources said.

A struggle ensued, and several shots were fired, including the one that killed Friedland, the sources said. Investigators believe the shooter used a handgun, according to the sources.

One of the attackers then entered the vehicle and ordered Friedland's wife out of the car at gunpoint, according to one source. The carjackers then sped away in two different cars, — Friedland's Range Rover, and the Subaru they drove to the mall in, the sources said.

anyone with information regarding the shooting or the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to call the tips line at (877) 847-7432.

I was following this on the news. His poor wife. So senseless.

Wonder why the car was found dented on the side and rear window smashed? If this was a car ring imo they would not damage it right?

Does this car have a GPS? When the wife was ordered out if the car did she leave her cell phone inside the car??

Praying for his wife and family :please:

You bring up some very good points and I wish I had an answer for them.

Surely there were cameras in the parking lot?? The mall has very high-end stores. Wouldn't they have tighter security than the run of the mill malls where I shop. :blushing:

Ugh i hate these senseless crimes that oft occur ......especially during the holidays. Prayers to this young mans wife and loved ones.

Because they were trying to escape so fast they could have hit something on the way out.
Or they got made because they had to ditch the car and damaged it on purpose.
Sounds like the victim resisted because his wife was already in the car. I am sure he didn't want to give up the keys with his wife being inside the car.

You are probably right, especially reading this

According to authorities, Friedland apparently was walking behind the vehicle after opening his wife's door and helping her get in, when he was confronted. There was a struggle...

(So the struggle probably happen behind the car) and gun shot blew out back window. It also says wife got out of vehicle.

Twin tire tracks in the unshoveled snow traced the path of the vehicle as it went down the driveway some time during the night and pulled around a tight corner to the back, apparently to hide it from the street.

One resident said police were checking another surveillance camera on a house across the street, but could not say whether the camera had been monitoring the scene overnight.
