Parent identifies sex offender at school

Police are tipped off that Francisco Cruz Gomez has been volunteering at his daughter's Grover Beach preschool

    By Cynthia Neff

    The Tribune

Parents of preschoolers at a county-run program in Grover Beach will be told when they drop off their children today that police have arrested a convicted sex offender who has been volunteering there.

A county education official said his office wasn't aware of Francisco Cruz Gomez's criminal history before police brought it to its attention Friday. Gomez was arrested Monday on charges of failing to register as a sex offender.

John Barnhart, assistant superintendent for educational services, stressed that nothing happened that might have compelled a parent to bring Gomez's past to police attention. And, he said, Gomez never had an opportunity to be alone with children at the preschool, which his 4-year-old daughter attends.

Though the state doesn't require education officials to conduct background checks of parent volunteers at the preschool, administrators at other preschool programs in the county run parents' names though the Megan's Law database.

Yes! She was checking that database! That makes the effort of the database worth it right there!
Just when I think that I have seen the most depraved things a human can do to another human, somebody posts a new story...........

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?
