William Billy Reed, Jan. 8, 1988
Billy Reed lived in an old school bus along U.S. 501 in Big Island. The 79-year-old lived alone and liked to walk up and down the highway to pass the time.
On Dec. 31, 1987, Reed cashed some checks at the bank. On Jan. 4, he visited his daughter. On the 6th, someone saw Reed walking along U.S. 501 and that is the last that anyone saw of him.
On Jan. 8, 1988, he was reported missing.
When investigators arrived at the bus, they noticed the door was open. They searched in, around and under the bus, along Reeds usual walks, but they could find no trace of him.
His disappearance has never been ruled a homicide although there have been reports that he was killed and his body dumped in the James River or elsewhere.
