IN - Marylyn, 52, & Kelley Erb, 23, slain in Westfield home invasion, 20 Dec 2013

Marylyn Erb, 52, and Kelley Erb, 23, a student at Ivy Tech Community College were found dead from blunt-force trauma. Husband has been ruled out. They lived in a big beautiful home, in a low crime area. Last murder was 5 years ago.
Police said a 2011 maroon Buick Enclave was taken from the Erb home at some point. The vehicle was found a short distance away on East 161st Street.

Video was released the next day of a person of interest. He is seen walking into a store. I am guessing he used the victim's credit card there. I thought they would catch him right away since they have video, but nothing so far.

I read a few articles on this case and some people are commenting about the lack of information and effort. For example, what is mentioned in this article is that the photos of the POI were taken in Lawrence which is about 20 miles south of Westfield.

Police are handing out fliers asking the public for information. But they are doing that in Westfield and many people feel it would be better to hand our the fliers in Lawerence.

Also, I do not see anything about a reward for information leading to the POIs arrest, other than $1,000 for calling crime stoppers. I wonder why local businesses, family members or community organizations in Westfield, which is apparently an affluent town, do not take up a collection and post a reward. A $50,000 reward will probably get more response than a $1,000 reward from crime stoppers.

I think this may be an inside job and the police suspect that.

This doesn't sound like an inside job at all.
They are showing video of someone and they don't know who that person is.

It's not unusual for a large reward not to be offered in the beginning stages of a major crime. In this case they have a POI in mind, it won't be long before someone ID's them.

It is possible it was a random act but if they are showing photos of that guy because a stolen credit card was used that could mean a lot of things.

If someone were to leave a wallet with credit cards in a seedy area there is a good chance the cards might be used. Maybe that is not what happened but if this guy just committed a double murder he has a lot of nerve using the cards in a store right after.

Although there are no signs of forced entry at the house, police are still trying to figure out how the killer may have gotten inside the home.
Any word on if the victims were sexually assaulted?

I think the killer got in though an open garage and an unlocked inside door. The POI his sun glasses and low pulled hat, trying to disguise self and so far it has worked.

Or the victims could have left the door or window open.
If they live in a low crime area (which it appears to be) they might have been not worried about crime.

An arrest has been made and it is not the guy in the photo.

Here is the connection "Investigators say they believe the victim's home was not randomly selected. Haley was a former employee at the Erb family's landscaping company."

Westfield Police say 20-year-old Christian Haley was arrested for the murders.

His picture is in this article:
    http://www.wibc.com/news/story.aspx?ID=2101956

There had been a clustering of home invasions in that area.
Their slayings were among a serious of brutal home invasions that have struck residents of the metro area.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police have arrested at least 11 people suspected of being involved in a series of home invasions on Indianapolis’ Far Northside in October.

Not sure if this crime was part of those crimes, but it was included in the article.

If he (they?) were involved in these previous home invasions it seems very odd then to say that they had been targeted specifically b/c he was a former employee.

Did he not quite know where they lived and so all this was in an attempt to find them?

Did he do the others as a scare tactic?

Did he capitalize on the other invasions and think they'd assume it was related and that the murders might be lumped in with that and he'd get off free, perhaps?

Given the area and at least where they lived clearly being affluent, you'd think there would be A LOT of homes w/ video - or even at the entrance/exits of neighborhoods, etc.

Yet even saying that, they've also arrested at least 11 tied to other invasions. How big do they think this group is? The MO of many of those incidents seem to have involved multiple subjects in most of them and car thefts in several of them. Oddly, at least one of those was also a mother/daughter who were robbed/assaulted/had vehicles stolen.

Given that they're not saying how the guy who's picture they released (but isn't the one arrested today, only questioned) may be related, I wonder if they think this is still a much broader ring and while the Erbs were targeted - at least in part, specifically, it seems - I wonder if it may have just been added motivation?

And clearly that guy they released the still of is someone they had significant reason to suspect or they'd not have released that...and they say they've questioned him. I'm assuming they mean post-releasing that image? Otherwise wouldn't they have released his name and not just the image? Since obviously if they had interviewed him already they'd know his name...so they're apparently just not identifying him publicly now.

Interesting they're not saying he's NOT somehow related to the Erb murder. They're also clearly NOT saying he's fully cleared...of this or anything else...

    Not discounting their police work:

"Westfield prides itself in being named one of the best places to live and one of the safest communities in the country. The fast acting police work over the past few days proves that Westfield employs some of the best police officers in the state and will continue to be one of the safest cities in Indiana and the country."
But with all these home invasions (and several that have been violent) I'm thinking they need to reevaluate their identity and what they're priding themselves on... This is months of these now.

.The Erbs owned a landscaping business where the killer had worked. I would guess that many of the homes in that area where customers. Could be linked to the other home invasions?

Another article, this one has pictures and bio of the victims.
