Germany: 67 funeral urns found in empty home

67 funeral urns containing ashes that were meant to be buried at sea, have been found in an abandoned home in Stolberg, Germany.

A former funeral director is under suspicion of fraud, which he denies.

Local authorities have refused to reveal how old the remains are, or where they are now. 'Let the dead rest in peace', said Katrin Buchmann.

In such typically German style, not only were the urns abandoned but so was the carefully collected paperwork too - right down to the packaging boxes and delivery notes from the Crematorium the urns arrived from. One's dated 2008. This is not unusual, I've found. I cleared a house here with receipts spanning the years 1900-2000.

I believe from his website the funeral director in question offers a special, 'anonymous' sea burial service without the family having to attend, and therein lies the problem. The article here mentions about $123,000 may have been paid for the sea burials that weren't. That's a solid amount of money where he's based; enough to walk away from an old crumbling house and buy a nicely done up one.
