UK - Jean Campbell, 53, Glasgow, Scotland, 13 Dec 2013

Police have released cctv of murdered Glasgow, Scotland, resident Jean Campbell walking her German Shepherd dog, shortly before she was murdered in a suburban park.

Jean was last seen by her husband when she left their home Friday 13th Dec about 5pm (quite dark then) and her dog returned home without her. She was found Saturday morning - believed to be by her husband John - in Cranhill Park off Bellrock Street.

I guess Jean's murderer has no fear of dogs and may be a dog owner themselves - German Shepherds are one of the breeds that are very likely to defend their owners, and everybody knows that.

Jean's last moments.

I am confused though. First articles says husband last saw her 5pm when she left home to walk the dog, but this cctv has a time of 10.30pm at night?

Perhaps her murderer was known to the dog. If she was killed by someone she knew, its likely that person was familiar with the dog too, and the dog was comfortable with that person.

It's weird. One of those articles says she was wearing pyjamas.

And they all appeal for information from the public, but none of them provide a telephone number.

I wonder when Jean was reported missing?

One of the articles states the dog came home, and one states it was found at the park. So if this woman was not robbed or raped, what is the motive here? I didn't see anything that tells much about her murder. The time is off too.

Just like to clear a few points on her timeline.

Facts stated by the police.

1.The most *IMPORTANT* thing to know…
It has been stated that her HUSBAND was WORKING NIGHTSHIFT when Jean went missing, he returned from work in the morning and that is when he noticed her and the dog missing,
2.The 5pm sighting of Jean wasn't stated to have been by her husband, it was stated to be a family member but that was the only information given.
3.She lived very very close to where she was found dead, metres rather than hundreds and hundreds of meters.
4.She was spotted on CCTV in a shop (after 5pm) buying dog food and then later by a friend in the fast food place next door.
6.CCTV of her at 22:30, yards from where she was found dead, last known sighting.
7.Jean was found by her husband at 7:40 am (more than likely following her usual dog route), reportedly screaming down a passing taxi driver, the dog was found in the park alive at this time.
8.The police have stated that the attacker might have minor cuts or bruises to their face and may have come home with 'muck' (dirt) or grass stains on them.
9.The police have stated it was a brutally violent murder.
10.We simply do not know if the dog did or did not attack the murderer.


Speculative

1.The police have stated that they have yet to find a motive for the murder.

This could (or could not) imply that Jean was neither robbed nor raped.

Meaning we could be dealing with a predatory psychopath,
or someone known to Jean, i.e. personal.
or someone completely desperate ,
or out of their minds on something.

2.The person who murdered Jean did so in the full knowledge she had quite a large dog with her at the time. I'm not sure you can draw many real conclusions from this fact but i'm pretty sure it will have some relevance in due course.

So Jean's attacker might have known the dog, or the dog might be very old or passive. I hope not though. I hope they have bite marks which can take a long time to heal and might leave clear, bite scars.

This latest article says that mass DNA testing is going on in Jean's neighbourhood now. In other cases, this is where other killers have come up with nonsensical stories to persuade friends or family to take DNA tests for them, and they've been stupid enough to do it. In certain cases that has left a killer free to kill again.

I hope police are factoring that in this time, and demanding some sort of photo ID from everyone, though undoubtedly some people won't have any.

It was Ian Kelly I was thinking of. For the grand sum of £200 he took a DNA test while pretending to be his friend Colin Pitchfork, who had raped and murdered two teenage girls. Kelly boasted about it afterwards, and a workmate informed police.

That's very scary for those who live in the area. I wonder if the spot where she was found is very isolated. It's hard to imagine she didn't scream, so maybe somebody heard it but couldn't see them? Just horrible for her, and her husband.

In the second photo, she looks like she is looking across the road or has turned to her right slightly, or is it just my tired eyes.

The eye-witness (Hugh Devlin) who said they saw a hooded person in the park at 1:40am is also very chilling.

Incidentally Hugh was quoted in a newspaper article about another murder in Cranhill earlier this year.

Makes me think that perhaps she was settled for the night, then someone asked her to meet them, hence why she popped out again in her pyjamas - someone she knew well enough to feel comfortable to be meeting them dressed like that?

Can't think what for though - someone wanting to borrow money? Or maybe someone tricked her into meeting them - asking for help or pretending that a family member was hurt or something. Perhaps she took the dog along for piece of mind as it was late and dark.

If she usually took her dog out at the same time each night, perhaps someone had tried to "bump into her" during the first dog walk, but missed her and asked her to come back?

For her and the dog to have been left shut in the play area is significant to me, as the dog would have likely been there when she was attacked. So it must be someone the dog is familiar with, or surely it would have made a lot of noise and attacked the killer.

I have a German shepherd who is almost 9 years old, and she will still bark and growl extremely aggressively is someone she doesn't know comes to the door, and even strain to approach them, so no matter what age the lady's dog was, I would have expected it to show some form of defending its owner, and certainly made a lot of noise. Unless of course, it was completely comfortable with the attacker, despite what he/she was doing

Yes, I thought this was bizarre too. Makes me wonder if someone "lured" her there to meet. Or maybe she thought she'd dropped something during the walk and so was just popping back out in her pyjamas to look for it.

I certainly would've expected the dog to put up some sort of a fight or at least bark up a storm while all this was going on. The park doesn't look huge on Google maps so I'd expect someone would hear a dog going crazy. If this wasn't the case then I'd certainly be looking quite close to home.

Police think Jean fought and her attacker may have been injured. She was killed in a muddy children's playground so the killer was likely to have got dirty too. Police are asking anyone to recall someone they know coming home with mud and grass-stained clothing Friday Dec 13th or early morning Sat Dec 14th.

There's a strange timeline in this case. Jean last spoke to her husband around ten to 6 (pm) Friday. At 6 pm he left for his 7pm start as a nightshift production manager.

9.30pm?? Jean leaves home to walk the dog.

10pm - gets home, changes into nightwear.

10.30pm - walks dog again, in her pyjamas ( coat on top). police say that's unusual and they don't know why. Jean normally went to bed at 11pm.

7.30am - husband get's home, sees wife and dog missing and goes searching along their normal route. He found his wife's body, poor man, and the dog. The gate of the play area was shut, so the dog was trapped.

From this I guess:
Husband has a rock solid alibi
The killer shut the gate because he was afraid the dog would follow him. It would be a funny kind of German Shepherd that followed someone it didn't know.
The dog was taken for a last minute, extra walk that night. Why?

Did the dog have an upset stomach? But then why go all the way to the park again? Did something/ someone disturb the dog at home (maybe someone trying to get in) and Jean mistook that for the dog wanting to go out? If Jean had a call, police would know by now I'd think.

It could be that the killer intended to kill Jean inside her home, but she left to walk the dog just before he got in, so he followed her. But then he would be on the cctv too.

This is a sad, strange case. I am torn between thinking Jean was killed by a random stranger as a result of really unfortunate timing, or she was stalked by someone she knew. Where and if the second dog walk fits, I don't know.

Cranhill Park, Glasgow. I haven't found any recent murders of females in the area. There was this, with a victim around the age range of Jean;

2011 - 49 year old woman robbed and sexually assaulted.

The incident above is also quoted in this article where it quotes police saying Jean may have known her killer. It gives the reason for this as the dog not leaving the scene though, which we now know it couldn't do because of the shut gate.

I can't understand why a big dog like that wouldnt have fought the perp off of her.
As for her going back out? She may have been going to an ice cream van for cigarettes or something like that.
Possibly even going to a neighbours house for some late night chit chat. The perp could well be a female.

There hasn't been much further information given by the police about this case.

There is a picture at the above link which shows just how close Jean was to her home when she was attacked.

I find it interesting that the report above states police are DNA testing both men and women in the area, rather than just men. A few people on here have suggested she could have popped out to see a friend who she trusted (and was happy to see when dressed down for the night).
