NEW YORK - Two grenades exploded Thursday outside a building housing the British Consulate in New York City, causing minor property damage but no injuries. Officials said they had no indication that the consulate or anyone else in the building had been targeted.
...had been buried in a concrete planter outside the skyscraper on Manhattan's Third Avenue. They exploded about 3:30 a.m., officials said.
Initial attention focused on the consulate as a possible target, especially because British voters were holding an election Thursday to determine whether Prime Minister Tony Blair would win a third term.
But Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference near the building at 845 Third Avenue: "We don't know who the particular target was. There were no threats or phone calls, and nobody is claiming credit for this. So there's no reason to jump to any conclusions."
