Seller of toast with runaway bride's image gets burned

Associated Press
May. 9, 2005 08:15 AM

STILLWATER, N.J. - A man who auctioned off a slice of toast carved with his drawing of the runaway bride feels burned because the winning bidder has refused to pay for the item.

Perry Lonzello, 48, of Stillwater, used a piece of toasted Wonder Bread as the canvas for his rudimentary portrait of Georgia bride-to-be Jennifer Wilbanks, and posted it at the online auction site eBay on a whim.

The auction debuted with a bid of $1.11 on May 1, but that amount grew quickly after the item drew national attention. And when the auction ended Sunday, Lonzello said a California man had submitted the winning bid of $15,400.

Lonzello - who has said he planned to donate money from the auction to charity - was prepared to hand over the toast on national television Monday, only to learn that the buyer had a change of heart.

On Bill Maher's show last night (early this morning) he said when he heard this bride to be was missing, his first thought was "Wow, Scott Peterson is good."

He then said he had something she could smoke to take care of that bubbly eye problem. And that after seeing what a goober her fiance was, it no wonder why she thought a Greyhound Bus to Vegas was a MUCH better idea.

I'm a bit confused here.

All of the threads with a mention or discussion of Jennifer Wilbanks have been quickly closed to posts by a mod. The entire Wilbanks forum has been removed from WS. Neither of which, I understood, but that's beside the point.

Ms. Wilbanks is still a current newsworthy story that is still unfolding and according to media reports, she has committed crimes as in 3 published arrests for shoplifting.

Are we now able to discuss JW and this story or not? Just looking for clarification.
