Police sources say detectives determined there was just too much in common with a series of recent sexual assaults -- and the description of the suspect for them -- not to be related.

An announcement on the hunt is expected Friday morning.

The most recent incident was the rape of a 25-year-old woman who was walking back from the Heron Transitway station Monday around 10 p.m.

A man at the intersection of Lasalle St. and Aldea Ave. came up from behind, grabbed her and dragged her past the children's playground equipment at Heron Park, and raped her in the bushes".

The suspect is described by police as a man with dark hair, possibly of middle eastern descent, who spoke English, possibly with an accent. Police said he is between 20 and 30 years old and is between 5-feet-9-inches and 5-feet-11-inches tall. He is described as having a slim to medium build with thin facial hair.

The suspect also has a prominent nose and thick eyebrows, police said.

Witnesses have said the man takes care of his appearance and is described as a “fashionable or neat dresser.”

Wonder how much access to live surveillance cams LE has in the areas favored by this attacker?

Details appear sparse about of his method(s) of attack in each of these cases - time of day, lighting, noisy versus quite area, where does he hide, does he stalk then attack versus appears to come out of nowhere, etc... preferences in the type of woman he attacks...

Wonder if he checks out an area and plans during the day before attacking at night? Daytime surveillance cams of areas were attacks took place?

I hoped that there would be alot of sleuthing on this perp.

But amid the sparse information released so far, one angle is beginning to take form. This appears to be an “organized” calculating criminal who devises his attacks to avoid detection. That may give police clues about his personality. Organized predators, for example, are often socially adept and can appear psychologically stable. This man may have a wife, fiancee or girlfriend and a good job.

(The opposite is a “disorganized” perpetrator acting haphazardly and on opportunity, such as grabbing the first woman, any woman, who comes along.)

The organized criminal also is not stupid. He’s not going to put himself in a position where he’s too vulnerable. While many criminals operate in geographic zones where they feel comfortable, such as neighbourhood where they grew up or work, the three confirmed and seven possible attacks in this case run from Barrhaven to Orléans.

Ottawa police say they are actively pursuing the more than 100 tips they have received from the public since issuing a warning about a serial predator last week.

Incidents happened between August 2012 and October 2013

The assaults happened between August 2012 and October 2013 on Banner Road, Lancaster Road and Aldea Avenue. Police sources said the cases were linked with DNA evidence.

Aug. 5, 2012, at about 3 a.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted at her home on Banner Road.
June 26, 2013, at about 10 p.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted on a footpath between Lancaster Road and Erinbrook Crescent.
Oct. 7, 2013, at about 9:50 p.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted on Aldea Avenue near Lasalle Street.


While police are confident the suspect is linked to three files, they believe he may be linked to seven others:

Late March 2013, at about 5 a.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted in the 2600 block of Draper Avenue. In this case, police released surveillance video from inside the apartment building.

June 1, 2013, at about 4 a.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted on Laurier Avenue near Chapel Street.
Sept. 1, 2013, at about 4:30 a.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted in a park at 6376 Bilberry Dr.
Oct. 16, 2013, at about 10:45 p.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted in the 2400 block of Baseline Road between Woodroffe Avenue and Greenbank Road.
Dec. 17, 2013, at about 11:15 p.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted on Broadway Avenue near Craig Street.
Dec. 18, 2013, at about 11:15 p.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted in a park near the 1100 block of Bordeau Grove.
Jan. 5, 2014, at about 10 p.m.: A woman was sexually assaulted in the 600 block of Chapman Mills Drive.

makes me wonder if he was deployed or away on business and attacking somewhere else during those time periods

Perhaps those " active " times are when the perp's partner is expecting?

His thing for choking - perhaps a GF might come forward.... perhaps he went to far with one and she sought medical help, so checking emergency room reports might help..

Also, perhaps local working girls might know him as a weirdo client...

Wonder if some kind of sting operation could be setup to trap him... such as placing a fake ad ...

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service wishes to provide an update to the community on the linked sexual assaults investigation. Since the news conference of January 9, 2014, we received approximately 350 public tips.

We are thankful that people had the courage to contact police to report information or suspicions.

The investigative team continues to go through the public tips, assess them based on information we already know and determine an order of priority to address each of them.

We are taking this opportunity to say that the public tips have been very helpful to the ongoing investigation and we are renewing the call for people to call our tip line at 613-236-1222 ext. 4774 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.

Each piece of information is important to this investigation. Whether it is about a person who is suspected because of his resemblance to the two composites and descriptors, his intimate or personal behaviors, previous incidents, reported or not.

Since September 2013, we have identified over 120 persons of interest through public tips, police canvassing, crime analysis or other investigative avenues.

The investigating team wishes to express its appreciation to the men who have been identified through tips and are cooperating with our investigative process.

In a large-scale investigation such as this one, it is as important to be able to eliminate the people who have surfaced through public tips as persons of interest; as it is to identify the person responsible. The Ottawa Police do this through a professional, methodical and thorough process.

The team continues to work diligently on each reported case of sexual assault to determine if more cases are linked to the three confirmed linked cases. At this point in time, we have not made any more links.

The best way for Ottawa Police to determine if they are linked or not, is to identify the person responsible for each of them

To that end, we would like to draw the public’s attention once again to the video images of the Draper avenue sexual assault from late March 2013. We have confirmed that this is the man responsible for that incident; however we have yet to identify him.

The images are of good quality and someone should be able to recognize the suspect from these pictures. If you suspect you know this man, please call our tip line at 613-236-1222, ext. 4774 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.

We are also asking the public to look at the image of an important witness to the sex assault that occurred on January 5, 2014 on Chapman Mills Drive. This witness was captured by video surveillance in a nearby store around the time of the incident.


The witness is described as a Caucasian male with dark facial hair. He was wearing a dark puffy jacket with zippers, a toque and light coloured pants (see picture).
