MN - Hang Lee, 17, St. Paul, 12 Jan 1993

Missing Since: January 12, 1993 from St. Paul, Minnesota
    Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: October 9, 1975
    Age: 17 years old
Height and Weight: 5'0, 90 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Asian (Laotian) female. Black hair, brown eyes. Hang speaks English and Hmong.
Clothing/Jewelry Description: A lightweight black jacket, a black t-shirt, black jeans or slacks, and tennis shoes.

    Details of Disappearance

Hang was last seen leaving her family's residence in St. Paul, Minnesota on January 12, 1993. She left home with a female friend, Kia "Nikki" Lee, who is not related to Hang. Kia returned home shortly alone afterwards. Hang's parents, who are refugees from Laos and did not speak English at the time, reported her as a missing person to authorities. She left behind all her clothing, her college savings, a $100 paycheck and her purse, which contained a knife and a lead ball for personal protection. Just prior to leaving her home, she told her brother that if she did come back, he should search for her because she did not trust Kia.

Kia initially told authorities Hang had left with some unidentified young men. She later changed her story and said Hang had gone to a job interview with Kia's own employer, a 30-year-old local businessman. She said she had lied earlier because she believe Hang had run away and wanted to protect her, and also because her boss had told her not to tell anyone about her business.

The man owned a painting and decorating business and Hang hoped to get a better-paying job than the one she had. Kia said she and Hang had gone to meet him together and he dropped Kia off at a gas station on the east side of St. Paul and drove away with Hang. This man is the prime suspect in Hang's disappearance; he has been convicted of two particularly violent rapes and was a suspect in other sex crimes. He has been uncooperative with the investigation and has hired a lawyer. The suspect has never been charged in connection with Lee's disappearance and he has since moved away from St. Paul.

Hang is described as a sweet, naive teenager. She wanted to become a writer and enjoyed reading at the time of her disappearance, and had a part-time job as a server in a local restaurant. She was a senior at Highland Park High School and planned to attend the University of Minnesota after graduating. Hang's case remains unsolved. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance.

A mystery that tortures her family, a photo that haunts St. Paul police

Koua Lee was 15 when he last saw his sister and she said the words he's never forgotten.

As Hang Lee walked out the door of their St. Paul home, Koua went to lock it behind her.

His sister, then 17, turned back to her brother and said with a concerned face: "Koua, if I don't come back, come and look for me."

Hang Lee didn't come back. Her family has spent 21 years yearning to know what happened to her.

that "business owner" has a long rap sheet and has raped women before. It's too bad they can't interview him or bring him up on charges. Sad. He needs to tell us where Hang Lee is.

This is a sad case. I'm sure the friend knows more than she is saying. It sounds like she intentionally brought him a victim.

Poor Hang...It looks like the person(s) involved in her disappearance won't be brought to justice and her remains won't be located either. Such a sad case.

If anybody knows what happened to Hang, please go to the police. Even an anonymous tip about where she can be found... If a murderer is still walking around, they will kill again.

Bumping, Hang Lee has been missing for 23 years now.

There’s no proof of what happened to her. At 17, she walked out of her family home, never to be seen, again. Her brother remembers the final haunting words she said to him: “Koua, if I don’t come back, come and look for me.” Allegedly, she was last seen with a convicted sex offender, but no one has been arrested in her case. Police are still looking for answers.

Family Hopes For Answers in 23 Year - Old Case

Now, her family is hoping to finally get some answers. It all comes after the man authorities believe was the last person to see her alive is charged yet again with another serious, but unrelated crime.

Even though the new, disturbing charge is unrelated -- the court papers directly address the disappearance of Hang Lee.

When Hang never came home, police assumed she ran away. Until five months later, when they learned the man supposedly interviewing her for a job, Mark Steven Wallace, was a twice-convicted sex offender.

"They were very vicious rapes," said St. Paul Police Sgt. Garry Velento in the 1990s.

When police kicked open the door to a Woodbury motel room on Saturday morning, they found a bruised, malnourished and terrified young woman, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Washington County District Court.

Police arrested the man who tried to flee the room, Mark Steven Wallace, 54, of Andover, and he was charged with kidnapping and stalking.

Woman says Suspect in St. Paul Cold Case Admitted to the Crime
A woman says the suspect in a St. Paul teenager's disappearance admitted to the crime.

Seventeen-year-old Hang Lee went missing back in 1993 and hasn't been seen since.

Now, the man St. Paul Police have long suspected in her disappearance is behind bars on an unrelated charge and court documents in that case are revealing new details in what may have happened to Lee.
