I think the mother and/or boyfriend killed this poor little baby and maybe her father. Little girl Journey was taken to the hospital not breathing. Mother and Mother's boyfriend taken to jail after the exam showed evidence of abuse. Suspiciously, the father of the child is conveniently dead too. He was found in the Etowah River last month. But, police AREN'T looking into any connection between the two deaths because the father had drug problems and suffered from seizures.

"Though the results of the autopsy are not final, investigators arrested late Thursday the mother, 25-year-old Brandy Ann Boyd, and her boyfriend, 24-year-old Austin Levi Payne, on charges of aggravated battery and first-degree cruelty to children.

Millsap said further charges against the two are likely, pending the final autopsy results."

Charges upgraded to murder for both mom and boyfriend.

The poor child was beaten to death. Fractured skull and blunt force trauma to her stomach. Evidence of past abuse includes broken ribs and a cracked femur that had healed.

Unbelievable. She was just a year old.

Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap told Channel 2's Diana Davis Monday that the autopsy shows a long and systematic pattern of child abuse.

The medical examiner says this appears to be the worst she has ever seen, Millsap told Davis. Its a systematically, six to seven months of abuse on this young child.

The sheriff said the case remains open. He said it is possible the charges in this case could be upgraded again to malice murder.

A Bartow County grand jury had indicted a mother and her boyfriend on a murder charge in connection with the death of a 1-year-old girl.

Brandy Ann Boyd and Austin Levi Payne are facing charges of malice murder, felony murder, first degree cruelty to children, aggravated battery and battery.

A couple accused in connection with the death of a 1-year-old in January entered not guilty pleas Tuesday in Bartow County Superior Court.

Brandy Ann Boyd and Austin Levi Payne were arraigned on murder charges in connection with the death of Boyd’s daughter, Journey Ann Cowart. Each faced 22 counts — four of malice murder, six of felony murder, eight of first-degree cruelty to children, three of aggravated battery and one count of battery...

During a Partnerships for Healthy Communities Child Abuse Intervention & Prevention course through Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in July, Bartow County Deputy Coroner Brian Irish addressed the Cowart case, which he responded to as coroner. “… I can tell you this. I’ve been in EMS for going on 19 years. That is… the worst case [of child abuse] I have ever been involved in,” Irish said. “I was at the autopsy for this little girl and it’s horrible the injuries that this kid sustained. I can tell you that this wasn’t a one-time thing. This kid had [been] abused for many months. OK? Many, many months."

A couple convicted by a Bartow County jury in the death of 1-year-old Journey Ann Cowart faces life in prison when they appear June 2 before a judge for their sentencing.

Two convicted child murderers will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.

Bartow County Superior Court Judge Carey T. Nelson on Tuesday sentenced both Brandy Ann Boyd and Austin Levi Payne to life in prison without parole for their roles in the beating death of Boyd’s daughter, Journey Ann Cowart.
