Have they spoken to the friend that dropped her off? As the years go by the friend could have had details surface in their memory that may not have initially seemed important.

Is or was the Volusia Mall known for criminal activity? Were there cameras that may have captured her there?

Who would she leave with? At 16 she wouldn’t have had a lot of cash to run off & begin a new life. The economy was doing ok in 2004. Did she have a job?

“Details of Disappearance
Autumn disappeared from Ormond Beach, Florida on May 10, 2004. She was last seen when a friend dropped her off at the Volusia Mall. Authorities believe she left of her own accord.

Autumn's grandmother still lives in the area and hopes she will be found. Few details are available in her case.”

All great questions. And with so few details, how did they deduce that she ran away? And how far did they get in their investigation? I detest when they label a runaway. Unless, IMO, of course, they have some type of evidence? Or not?

Autumn L. McClure, 16 (left) was reported missing in 2004. On Wednesday, her remains were believed to have been unearthed near Ormond Beach (right).

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The remains of a 16-year-old Ormond Beach girl who went missing nearly 20 years ago might have been unearthed, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

In a release, deputies said that the teen — Autumn L. McClure, a former student from Mainland High School — had last been seen in May 2004 after her boyfriend dropped her off at the Volusia Mall

Sheriff’s detectives continued to investigate McClure's case in the nearly 20 years that followed, obtaining DNA from family members, re-interviewing friends and possible witnesses, and identifying a person of interest in 2021. That person died in May 2022, but the investigation continued, sheriff's investigators said.

Investigators were led to a suspected burial site in the Ormond Beach area, where the remains were found Wednesday, the sheriff's office said.

Might have been something in the possession of the POI.

Autumn Lane McClure, 16, of Ormond Beach, was last seen on May 10, 2004, when her boyfriend dropped her off at the Volusia Mall, according to a statement from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday afternoon, Investigators dug up a “suspected burial site” in the Ormond Beach area, and made the gruesome discovery, the statement said.

“Sheriff’s detectives continued to investigate the case in the nearly 20 years that followed, obtaining DNA from family members, re-interviewing friends and possible witnesses, and identifying a person of interest in 2021,” the sheriff’s office said. “That person died in May 2022, but the investigation continued.”

The possible discovery of the girl’s body who went to high school in Daytona Beach was not the conclusion his detectives wanted, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Wednesday in a post on X. He added the investigation showed his agency cares about victims, whether from recent cases or from cases decades ago.

“Not the result anyone hoped for in 2004 or ever since, but I am very proud of the work that went into this discovery 20 years later,” Chitwood wrote. “At the very least we can say we never gave up on Autumn McClure’s case. Prayers and condolences to the family tonight.”

who led investigators to her body?
My guess is her killer told a family member or close friend about it, and then perhaps very recently they have chosen to come forward to police about it? I notice the POI died a couple years ago so perhaps there's no real need to keep it secret any more?

Snipped by me:

In 2022, Donley, the suspect in the case, died almost the same exact day detectives believe McClure was murdered.

Freeman agreed to tell detectives what happened on the condition of being granted immunity.

She then shared that McClure was involved in a relationship with Donley, who was 31 years old at the time.

She continued to explain that after coming home from work, she saw Donley choking McClure in the bathroom, but when she attempted to react, it was too late, and McClure was lifeless.

Donley threatened Freeman and said the same thing would happen to her if she spoke to detectives.

The body of the victim was buried underneath the home trailer, and detectives were able to find the body by excavating the area on Feb. 27, 2024.

I cannot imagine how this child would have willingly entered into a relationship with this couple. He had to have groomed her and wanted her for himself, instead of his wife/girlfriend. If she had been living there for weeks, months or more, that would be more indicative of a relationship so to speak. But not "for a few days." That just reeks of kidnapping.

Information then led officers to the home of Donley and Freeman. The pair said that McClure stayed with them for a few days but left and they had not seen her since. The trio worked together at a Winn-Dixie supermarket.
