Spanish Fork • An "evil" ran through Utah County on Thursday afternoon leading to "a horrific set of events" that left one deputy dead, another injured and a suspect critically injured in a shootout, the county’s sheriff said.

Armed with a high powered rifle, the suspect wreaked chaos through Utah County and into Juab County before he was critically wounded in an exchange of gunfire with Juab County deputies, Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy said.

But before the suspect was brought down by deputies, 20-year veteran sheriff’s Sgt. Cory Wride was dead and his colleague in surgery, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Wride leaves behind a wife and five children.

The suspect, whose name was not released, had a "significant criminal history," Tracy said.

This is awful. Deepest condolences to the family of the officer and I pray the other officer makes it. I also pray for strength for the other officers involved.

Thanks for posting this story.

Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy says a fugitive suspected of killing one Utah deputy and wounding another has died.

Tracy says 27-year-old Jose Angel Garcia-Juaregui succumbed to his wounds on the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 31. He was shot a day earlier by law enforcement officers who were in pursuit of him for nearly 2 ½ hours.

Tracy says Garcia-Juaregui's death means authorities might never know his motive for leading police on a crime spree covering 50 miles in Utah and Juab counties.

I was honored to attend the funeral services of fallen Utah County Sgt. Corey Wride. It was one of the most moving experiences. I have attached a few of the articles from the last week. I am so very proud of our community. The schools were closed early, Main Street was closed for over 2 hours for the procession, from the time that the casket arrived at the grave, it took over 1 1/2 hours for all of the procession to park and reach the grave. There was SO much support for this fallen hero.

His family is amazing. I know how much they are hurting, but their faith and dedication is just amazing!

He gave SO many years of his life protecting and serving our community. The following pictures and the following audio should move you.

A trial was set Monday for the Draper teen charged in connection to a January shooting, in which she and her boyfriend allegedly tore through two counties as he shot and killed one police officer and wounded another.

Meagan Dakota Grunwald, now 18, is charged as an adult with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and 11 other charges related to the Jan. 30 death of Utah County Sgt. Cory Wride near Lehi and the wounding of Utah County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Sherwood in Santaquin.

On Monday, the teen made a brief court appearance, where a two-week trial was scheduled to begin Feb. 10.

A Utah woman is expected to stand trial early next year in the killing of a Utah County sheriff's deputy after she rejected a plea deal from prosecutors Monday...

Under the plea deal, Grunwald would have faced 15 years to life in prison if she pleaded guilty to murder, robbery and assault. Prosecutors offered to recommend she only serve 15 years, but that wouldn't prevent a judge or state parole officials from keeping the young woman in prison for the rest of her life.

Prosecutors say two weeks before Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Cory Wride was shot and killed by Jose Angel Garcia-Juaregui, Garcia pulled a gun on his girlfriend's father. On Tuesday, a judge ruled that jurors will be allowed to hear that story during the upcoming aggravated murder trial of Garcia's girlfriend, 18-year-old Meagan Grunwald...

Although prosecutors say Garcia fired all of the shots, they contend that Grunwald was a willing participant who was behind the wheel and continued to follow her boyfriend even when she had the chance to run from him. Grunwald, however, said she was compelled under threats of violence to her and her family if she did not go along with what Garcia told her to do...

Her trial is scheduled to begin April 28.

Trial is almost over. Jury has begun deliberations.

It's now up to six women and two men to decide whether Meagan Grunwald acted intentionally out of love for her older boyfriend or out of fear she would be shot when she drove the getaway truck for the man who killed a sheriff's deputy and gravely wounded another during a violent crime spree.

She testified and really put on a show. I really hope that she doesn't get away with this!! I do not believe her. The defense has done their job and transformed an angry, drug taking teen into a scared, helpless teen. I hope the jury sees through the facade. The prosecution did a great cross.

How gracious this widow is as I don't think I possess this strength to do so.

The Utah Court of Appeals has ruled that a jury relied on incorrect instructions when it convicted a Utah teen in a 2014 crime spree in which one peace officer was killed and another was wounded.

But while the appeals court has remanded Meagan Grunwald’s case back for a new trial, the judges ruled that the woman’s convictions of aggravated murder — for the death of Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cory Wride — and a charge of aggravated robbery for carjacking a vehicle will remain.
