It's still a mystery to Lorenzo Torres, age 6, how so much of his dog Blackie's blood got splattered across his outside wall.
He found her a few months ago under his mom's car, dying as her puppies squealed nearby. Lorenzo had heard gunfire before but had never seen so much blood, and was dumbfounded by the sheer amount.
''They were shooting into her paw, and I think it went through her head,'' Lorenzo, a stout, soft-spoken first-grader with liquid brown eyes, said as Blackie's remaining puppies, now half-grown, nipped at his knees. ``She didn't make it.''
''It's a death trap,'' whispered Weston's 14-year old son, who was afraid to see his name in print. The boy was once nearly clipped by crossfire outside the store. In those terrifying milliseconds he forgot his mother's stern instructions to duck and instead fled for his life with his 11-year-old cousin close behind.
