Multiple murderer escapes from Michigan prison

Elliot may have abducted a woman from Ionia using a knife or box cutter and drove to Elkhart, Ind., roughly 100 miles southwest of Ionia and near the Indiana-Michigan state line, where they stopped for gas. The woman escaped at the gas station and called police, Marlan said.

The gas attendant at the station told CBS Kalamazoo, Mich. affiliate WWMT he didn't believe there was anything suspicious when the pair came in. He says the woman asked for the gas station's address while Elliot was pumping gas. She then locked herself in the bathroom until police arrived. Elliot drove off. The woman wasn't injured.

Police made contact with the woman about 11:50 p.m. Sunday. Elliot left the gas station and was at large Monday morning, Marlan said.

"Citizens should immediately call 911 if they observe anything suspicious or possibly become aware of the whereabouts of ... Elliot," Marlan said in the email.

"IONIA, MI - A man serving life behind bars for murder in four 1993 deaths in Michigan has escaped from prison and apparently abducted a woman before she got away in Indiana, authorities said Monday.

Michael David Elliot, 40, was discovered missing about 9:30 p.m. Sunday from the Ionia Correctional Facility in mid-Michigan, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said in an email.

" Michael David Elliot, 40, was still on the lam early Monday — hours after authorities discovered the convict was missing from the Ionia Correctional Facility, which is about 40 miles west of Lansing, officials said.

Investigators believe Elliot, who had been locked up in the facility since 1994, abducted a woman nearby using a knife of a box cutter, said the state’s Department of Corrections spokesman, Russ Marlan.

But the woman managed to get away from the man whey they stopped for gas in Elkhart, Ind, about 130 miles south, just before midnight, Marlan said. The woman called for help, but Elliot — who stands 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds — fled before police arrived.

Authorities said they were still looking for the woman’s red 2004 Jeep Liberty that has the license plate number 5FTG55."

See what put convicted killer, prison escapee Michael David Elliot behind bars

GLADWIN, MI — Nearly 20 years ago, a jury took only 90 minutes of deliberating before finding Michael David Elliot guilty of the brutal killing and burning of four people in rural Gladwin County.

Elliot, now 40, escaped from the Ionia Correctional Facility overnight on Sunday, Feb. 2, officials from the Michigan Department of Corrections have said. Elliot kidnapped a woman using a knife or box cutter and drove with her to Elkhart County, Ind., where she was able to escape after Elliot stopped for gas. She called police and officers made contact with her at approximately 11:50 p.m. Sunday.

Prison fences are equipped with motion sensors to alert guards. The fences also carry electric current to shock anyone that touches them...

"It appears that did not happen. ... He was not zapped with electricity, and he was not picked up by the motion sensors," Marlan said.

Just saw a Breaking News crawl on Channel 4 (WDIV) that Michael Elliot was captured in Indiana.

Police: Michigan escaped prisoner captured

IONIA, Mich. — A convicted killer who peeled a hole in two fences with his hands to escape from a Michigan prison before abducting a woman and fleeing to Indiana was captured Monday evening, authorities said.

Officials were stunned by the brazen escape Sunday night of Michael David Elliot, who had a record of good behavior during his 20 years in custody. He wore a white civilian kitchen uniform to evade security and blend in with snow at the Ionia Correctional Facility in western Michigan, prisons spokesman Russ Marlan said.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Ron Galaviz said Elliot was in LaPorte County, Ind. when a sheriff's deputy investigating a vehicle theft tried to make a traffic stop. The suspect ran, but authorities were able to capture him...

This guy belongs in supermax prison, where he would have to beg just to see daylight. Jmo

ciao

I wonder if an investigation will show there was some inside assistance or was he just lucky that the defences were not working that day. Funny that both were not working and he was able to bypass them. JMO

Super Bowl timing, security funding part of Ionia prison break investigation

Union officials say a quadruple murderer’s escape from prison was made easier because guard towers are now empty to save money. Prison officials wonder if guards were distracted by the Super Bowl.

Whatever the case, Michael David Elliot, 40, was able to walk past multiple cameras and guards as he made a bold break from Ionia Correctional Facility on Sunday.

Two employees suspended at Ionia prison where prisoner escaped

Jim Lynch/The Detroit News

Two employees have been suspended at a western Michigan prison where a convicted killer escaped for 24 hours.

Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan says one is an officer and the other is a shift commander. He declined to provide their names or any other details but says the suspensions are related to the investigation at the Ionia Correctional Facility.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office began an investigation into how a man imprisoned for multiple murders was able to escape from the Ionia Correctional Facility on Sunday and remain on the loose for nearly a full day.

Michael David Elliot, 40, walked past a string of security cameras and guards to open a prison fence with his bare hands. He triggered no alarms or motion sensors and his absence wasn’t noticed by guards for 2½hours...

I saw this and I don't know why, I went to look at news for the 1993 murders. It seems the other guy convicted of them claims Elliot is innocent and it was he and the girl involved who did it.

Elliot, Charles Treece, his brother Paul Treece and Tammy LaCross all faced charges for the quadruple-homicide near Midland. Among the victims were LaCross’s mother Vickie Currie and her mom’s boyfriend Mike Tufnell.

Maybe that case is posted elsewhere
