Neighbours heard screaming before a woman was found dead in her front yard on Thursday morning.

The 52-year-old was on her way to work when she was killed near her car outside her Noble Park home in Theodore Avenue about 5.45am.

Homicide squad detectives have been told the woman had been alone beforehand, and it did not appear anything had been taken from her.

Thanks Marley. Heard about this at my local shops. Everyone talking about it. Getting too close to home. It is about 10 minutes walk from me in a quiet part of the neighbourhood. She had apparently not been in the area long. Wondering if she had left an unpleasant situation and it followed her to her new address. JMO

A MOTHER found dead in her front yard in Melbourne's southeast is believed to have been attacked as she was leaving to go to work.

Up to four concerned neighbours called police after hearing screams on Theodore Avenue in Noble Park about 5.45am.

Another resident alerted Triple 0 after finding the woman laying lifeless beside her car in the driveway.

Her death is being treated as suspicious.

Acting Senior Sergeant Duncan Bartley said the woman suffered "visible injuries" but would not elaborate further.

He said Homicide Squad detectives were combing the area in a bid to locate a weapon.
