Sordid claims in Katie Foreman murder trial

Feb. 7, 2014

The friendship between slain Wollongong solicitor Katie Foreman and her murderer Wendy Evans had soured in the months before her death after Evans allegedly learnt her son and ex-boyfriend had both slept with Ms Foreman, a court has heard.

Ms Foreman died when a deliberately-lit fire ripped through her Corrimal home in October 2011.

Evans has pleaded guilty to her murder, however three others allegedly involved in the crime - Ms Foreman’s estranged partner Bradley Max Rawlinson, Bernard Justin Spicer and Michelle Sharon Proud - have denied the charge.

When I read about the way Katie Foreman died, I thought what a terrible way to die. In 2011, a fire began in my bedroom which I tried to put out many times with water but luckily I escaped alive and the fire brigade saved my house as within five minutes they were there.

Another thought I had was that as she was a solicitor, maybe an unhappy client could have done this.

But this was not the case and four people have been charged with her murder - one of whom has admitted guilt - and the other three have pleaded not guilty.

The one who pleaded guilty is Ms Evans, a former lover of Katie Foreman, whose motive seems to have been jealousy over a love triangle that Evans, Rawlinson and Foreman were involved in and also anger that Foreman had had sex with her son.

The go-between seems to have been Ms Proud who contacted Spicer to whom Evans offered $2,400 or $3,000 (different accounts in the media) to help her to do the job.

This appears to be another case where text messages reveal the truth and have implicated the other three people.

From media on February 4, 2014:

Rawlinson and Evans allegedly enlisted Spicer and Proud in their murder plot, and paid Spicer about $2000 to help carry out the crime.

Rawlinson, Spicer and Proud have each pleaded not guilty to murder.

However, Rawlinson yesterday offered to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

This plea was rejected by the Crown, as was a similar offer made by Spicer, who said he would admit to a charge of breaking and entering and committing a serious indictable offence.

Evans has already pleaded guilty to murder. The case continues in Wollongong today.

Katie Foreman was pregnant when she died

February 6, 2014

"The NSW Supreme Court jury hearing the case was this morning told Mr Rawlinson had been in regular contact with Ms Foreman's family during their relationship, however the level increased to daily communication in the days and weeks after her death.

Ms Foreman's cousin and close friend, Alicia Gibbs, told jurors during one of these conversations that a distraught Mr Rawlinson told her Ms Foreman was pregnant.

"He said Katie was pregnant when she died," Ms Gibbs said.

"I asked him if she'd told anyone. He said, 'no, just me'."

A former work colleague and friend of Ms Foreman, Kylie Falconer, said prior to her death Ms Foreman had once disclosed to her that at one stage she and Mr Rawlinson had become pregnant, but she had lost the baby.

From February 7:

Evans' allegedly told a former colleague she had lived with Ms Foreman at one stage but Evans never told her they were in a "lesbian relationship", the court heard.

Evans also allegedly told her former colleague she woke up in the back seat of a car after passing out from a "latex allergy" to find her boyfriend, who she broke up with in December 2010, and Ms Foreman having sex in the front seat.

After Evans and Ms Foreman's friendship soured, Evans allegedly told a former colleague: "She might be able to organise cocaine but I can organise a bullet."

Another former colleague said she saw Evans and Ms Foreman together often but in June 2011 Evans sent her a spiteful email.

"I found out over the weekend that Katie was sleeping with (my former boyfriend.) She doesn't know that I know yet," Evans allegedly wrote.

"Katie has f...ked with the wrong family. Every dog has its day."

From February 7, 2014:

Prostitute tells of offer to bash Katie Foreman

1. Rawlinson had offered a prostitute between $2000 and $3000 to assault Ms Foreman on one of her frequent nightly walks. Rawlinson started paying her for sex in 2009 and they became friends. Rawlinson had told her Ms Foreman went for regular walks along the bicycle track near WIN Stadium, usually around 11pm.

"He told me there was a woman in Corrimal who was a solicitor who was causing him problems in his business and personal life," she said. "He asked if I would assault her on the walk she does in Wollongong, for some money ... I declined. "He wanted me to put her in hospital pretty bad." "He told me she had blonde hair and was attractive," she said. "He was going to take me there when she went for her walk."

2. The court also heard from a former friend of Ms Foreman who said she and Rawlinson had started a sexual relationship one month after her death. The woman, who cannot be identified, told the court that Rawlinson was worried about Evans, who he claimed had made death threats against his parents.

3. Rawlinson also told her that he believed Evans and Foreman had had a lesbian affair. Two of Evans's former work colleagues also gave evidence, telling the court how her relationship with Ms Foreman had soured over allegations the solicitor had slept with Evans's ex-boyfriend.

Katherine Foreman's mother warned her about accused murderer Wendy Evans, court hears

1. KF's mother regrets not doing more to stop her daughter's relationship with a woman who later admitted to killing her. Ann Foreman told the NSW Supreme Court she had told her daughter Katherine Foreman she didn't want Katherine's then friend Wendy Evans around her grandchildren. Mrs Foreman said she had "no idea" Rawlinson and Evans were in a relationship in the months leading up to her daughter's death. She was caring for three grandchildren in 2011 at the time of KS' death.
"I chastised myself everyday. I admit unreservedly I was at times so distracted by the children I was only half listening," she said. When Rawlinson's barrister Winston Terracini SC told her she shouldn't blame herself for her daughter's death Mrs Foreman shot back, "I do".

2. Barrister Nathan Steel said Spicer had felt "used and deceived in the most tragic way'' over the incident. Mr Steel said Evans had assured Spicer no one would be home on the night of October 26, 2011. "His only intention was to damage property and he had no intention to harm Ms Foreman in any way," Mr Steel said. Yet crown prosecutor Chris Maxwell QC said Ms Foreman's car had been parked in the driveway that night, and her bedroom may have been specifically targeted. In the weeks after she died, Spicer is said to have left messages on Evans' phone demanding the $3000 he and Proud were allegedly promised to "carry out the deed". "Where's my f...ing money?" he asked in one, according to the prosecutor. "Hey you f...ers, I'm on my way to Brad's house so you better sort something out," he is said to have told Evans in another.

Family stays silent after tragedy

THE family and friends of Katie Foreman have maintained a dignified silence since she died in horrific circumstances just over 12 months ago.

1. On November 1, 2011, three days after her body was found in the burnt-out remains of her house, a simple, heartfelt death notice appeared in the Illawarra Mercury: ''Katherine Ann (Katie) Foreman. Dearly beloved daughter of Ann and Neal. Loved sister of Matthew. Loving partner of Brad Rawlinson. Loving aunty of Gemma, Liam and Brendon. Tragically taken. Forever in our hearts.''

2. On November 11, 2011, ''the Foreman family and Brad Rawlinson'' extended their sincere thanks to friends and colleagues for their support after the ''sad and tragic loss of Katie'' in another notice published in the paper. ''Your cards, prayers, phone calls, flowers and support were received warmly and have comforted us in this difficult time,'' the notice read.

TIMELINE

1. The Facebook updates began innocently enough. In July 2011, Wendy Anne Evans posted that she was ''over the ******** being spun''. She then wondered, ''who you can really trust in the world,'' before asking her friends, ''what do you consider boundaries in a friendship?''
But an increasingly bitter feud allegedly took a sinister turn when Ms Evans allegedly posted on her Facebook page: ''Note to self … take a deep breath, count to ten. Remember, murder is still against the law.''
According to police, the Facebook updates were just the beginning.

2. Mr Rawlinson and Ms Evans became an item mid 2011, and police allege the pair plotted Ms Foreman's murder in terrifying circumstances.
In the early hours of October 27, 2011, police allege Ms Evans and another co-accused crept up to Ms Foreman's Corrimal home and used a key to slip inside, where they poured petrol around her bed as she slept. When the fire was lit, it engulfed the main bedroom, leaving Ms Foreman with no escape route.

3. In a detailed case statement obtained by Fairfax Media, police have outlined a case that reveals Mr Rawlinson and Ms Evans were consumed by revenge, jealousy, desire and desperation as they plotted to kill the 30-year-old lawyer.

1. In the witness box on Wednesday, Ann Foreman said she let Rawlinson stay in her granny flat after the fatal inferno and he told her he and Ms Foreman had been weeks away from announcing their engagement. "He told me that he had bought Katie an expensive watch, an $8000 watch ... He told me he had purchased a $30,000 engagement ring," Mrs Foreman told the court. Rawlinson told her he planned to bury the ring in a memorial rose garden she had planted in Ms Foreman's honour, but as far as she knew, he never did.

2. Mrs Foreman said her daughter had never mentioned any engagement - to the contrary, she believed the relationship had cooled.
The month she died, Mrs Foreman said she'd asked her daughter: "How is it with you and Brad?" "He's still around," came the reply.

What an absolutely shocking crime this is! It's just awful. That poor woman.

Thank you Estelle, for all of the detailed info you've posted. I'd not heard of this case before. Much appreciated :seeya:

Trial of murdered lawyer Katie Foreman aborted due to witness knowing juror

The witness, who is yet to testify, is the president of a local sporting association of which the juror was the secretary.

Justice Ian Harrison ruled a mistrial in the NSW Supreme Court saying there was “no safe alternative” after the connection did not emerge during the “filtering” process of the jury.

“It’s my view that the only safe and proper course is to discharge the whole of the jury and start again,” Mr Harrison said.

“In a roundabout way it’s been revealed one of your number may be a member of the same committee of that club.”

I agree with you that this was an absolutely shocking crime. To be burnt alive when you have been sleeping is the worst revenge.

Due to little media coverage, and the fact that I had had a house fire about the same time, I am very interested in this case as it was an horrendous death.

The trial will begin again next Monday.

I've been trying to find a photo of Wendy Evans in MSM and have been unable to. Does anyone have a pic of her? :seeya:

I want to see what kind of woman could do this to another woman....

I too had really wanted to see a pic if her and couldn't find one! I'm so glad I'm not the only one, I was worried that I was a bit odd LOL

Article from a few days ago.

Wendy Evans was a master deceiver who manipulated two men into helping her orchestrate and carry out the revenge killing of Wollongong solicitor Katie Foreman, a court has heard.

Evans, who has already pleaded guilty to murder over her role in Ms Foreman's death, manipulated Bradley Rawlinson and Bernard Spicer into helping her set Ms Foreman's Corrimal home on fire in the early hours of October 27, 2011, lawyers for both men told jurors in Wollongong on Wednesday.

Rawlinson and Spicer, along with Spicer's partner Michelle Proud, are on trial in the NSW Supreme Court accused of murdering Ms Foreman, who died when the fierce blaze ripped through her home.
