A 57-year-old woman who owned 20 cats was mauled to death by two vicious neighborhood dogs outside her Ohio home on Friday morning.

Klonda Richey's lacerated body was found naked on snow-covered Bruce Avenue, Dayton about 8.15am, thrashed by her next door neighbors' male mixed breed Bullmastiffs.

Records have revealed Richey complained at least six times about the 60-pound canines before her horrific death, but authorities said they were never able to find the dogs.

This case reminds me of the Diane Whipple case in San Francisco in 2001 and the dogs owners were rightly charged.

What an awful death!

From your link:

"The six calls made by Richey mainly related to concerns about the dogs' barking: 'Dog is straining to get to water and food that are empty, advised is ongoing issue'."

'We are aware of additional complaints, unfortunately, the owners have never responded to any of our calls to the best of our knowledge. We are looking into this matter,' Kumpf said."

What a load of cr@p......the owners don't respond to the Animal Resource Ctr so they just dropped the nine complaints and didn't follow up? They could never find the dogs? GMAB

Why was she naked? Does that make sense? She's in the road, naked and mauled. did the dogs drag her out of the house?

That seems so odd to me.

ETA: The article does say the dogs ripped her clothes off. :(

This is just disgusting. They could never find the dogs?! Someone has some explaining to do NOW!

They were big dogs. Sounds as if she were trying to get away from them and they were grabbing at her clothes. Awful way to die.

Even if there were charges in a criminal case it might be hard to find the owners of those dogs. According to the Montgomery County Court Docket, Andrew Nason and Julie Custer are nowhere to be found. The administer of the estate of Klonda Richey filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit in May against them.

Court records say for months they have been trying to serve the complaint to the couple without success.

These two were arrested back in September, not that it means justice for Klonda. :(

A Montgomery County grand jury declined to indict Nason, 29, and Julie Custer, 26 - Klonda Richey's neighbors who owned the dogs - on any charges related to Richey's death. The grand jury ignored charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide and failing to confine or restrain a dog. The dogs which killed Richey were registered to Custer.

Assistant prosecutor Andrew Sexton, said Nason faces a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine on each count.

Those dogs were obviously pit/mastiff mixes. Bullmastiffs weigh 110-130 lbs, not 60 lbs.

Sounds like the dogs were neglected/abused (empty food and water, barking etc..) and no one cared until they killed the neighbor lady.

That story involved Cane Corsos, which are considered livestock guardians. Many livestock guardians are very large (much larger/stronger than dogs used to protect against human threats) and also extremely independent thinkers that do NOT rely on, or listen to human commands. They were bred to protect the flocks without human guidance, so they use their own judgement.

Problem is when <mod snip> get those dogs to "look tough" they have no idea what they have and they don't keep the dogs safely confined. I have a livestock guardian and he would brutally attack any trespasser that came into our yard or threatened me, if he wasn't kept in a fenced yard he would attack "trespassers" walking down the road near the house. He is exceedingly gentle and trustworthy with livestock (I have chickens) but is a real threat to strangers which is what he was bred for.

The dogs have thousands of years of breeding behind them and are usually extremely intelligent animals, I hate to see them get a "bad rap" simply because they are ending up in the hands of abusive idiots. When ghetto types ask me what type of dog he is I never ever tell them, I just make something up as I hate to think of these dogs being abused/mishandled the way pits have been.

Sonya, the dog is just being a dog -- the people need to be held responsible for their criminally irresponsible handling of the dog!

From May:

Andrew Nason, 30, and Julie Custer, 27, were sentenced today in Dayton Municipal Court a couple weeks after both pleaded no contest and were each found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of failure to control dogs.

Judge Carl Henderson sentenced Nason to 150 days in jail, 500 hours of community service in the next year, a $500 fine and court costs. Custer was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 480 hours of community service in the next three years, a $200 fine and court costs.

This guy, Andrew Nason, is the gift that keeps on giving:

Nason is accused of hurting his girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter. Investigators said Nason was babysitting on September 11, 2012, while the child’s mother was at work. The child suffered serious head trauma and was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

This case was on the ID channel last night and today. Horrible case and a total miscarriage of justice all the way around IMO

Just saw this -- released today:

It has been more than six years since an Ohio woman was mauled to death by her neighbors’ dogs, but officials are expected to vote to award a $3.5 million settlement for her family on Tuesday, a county spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE.

The Montgomery County Commission is expected to vote on the terms of the settlement, which was approved by a probate judge as part of a settlement between the county and the estate of Klonda Richey, the Dayton Daily News reports.
[...]
On Tuesday, the county commission will vote on the terms in hopes of avoiding a trial.

“This lovely lady passed away. You never get over that,” commission president Judy Dodge told the Daily News. “But it has been dragging on for a while … Nobody wants to go through a trial.”

Dodge said she hopes the settlement brings “peace to the family and some closure.”
