"LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Nearly 40 years after two girls disappeared walking home in Montgomery County, police say they have a potential break in the case.

Montgomery County Police say they have a “significant development” in the disappearance case of the Lyon sisters — Sheila, 12, and Katherine, 10 — who vanished in 1975 while walking home in Kensington.

Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger and Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Maryland Steve Vogt will make the announcement at a news conference Tuesday.

According to police, detectives have identified a person of interest who was at Wheaton Plaza on the day the girls disappeared. Police say the person of interest is a convicted child sex offender who is currently in prison.

They plan to release photos of the person of interest on Tuesday in hopes of gathering more information about him, his associates, and his activities, according to a press release.

Sheila and Katherine Lyon left their Kensington home on March 25, 1975 and walked to nearby Wheaton Plaza. The girls never returned home.

Several witnesses, including the girls’ older brother, saw the two girls inside the shopping mall before their disappearance. An extensive search and investigation process resulted, but no one has been charged in the case."

This is BIG!
Why in the world do we have to wait until tomorrow?

There has been a lot of "chatter" about the newscast today on Facebook. Everyone is so anxious for any current news or resolution to this 39 year old case.

anyone have any guesses, hunches, theories?

Just read this article in the Daily Mail I though I would post it here:

Detectives have made a break in the 39-year-old cold case disappearance of two young girls that shocked Washington, DC.

Police say they have identified a convicted sex offender who is currently in prison as a possible suspect in the 1975 disappearance of Sheila and Katherine Lyon.

Hopefully this will bring closure to the family. I wonder what has lead to this news breaking. This case is one that I have followed closely here I found it difficult to understand how two young people could disappear without a trace.

I think it may be convicted sex offender Fred C based on the information posted by Richard the websleuths member who has posted here but that is just my own opinion. I hope this news reaches all the posters here who care about the case. I hope there is news soon.

Press conference tomorrow, according to the Daily Mail link above. They will announce the name of the suspect and ask for tips from the public.

I haven't read this thread for a year or two, so will go back and re-read tonight.

Break in Decades-Old Disappearance of Lyon Sisters: Police | NBC4 Washington

A person of interest has been identified in connection with the 1975 disappearance of two young girls from a Maryland shopping center.

Sheila Lyon, 12, and her sister Katherine, 10, were on their way home from the Wheaton Plaza Shopping Center in March 1975 when they disappeared.

A composite sketch was widely distributed and tips flowed in, but the Lyon sisters were never seen or heard from again.

Sources tell News4's Pat Collins a cold case squad has identified a person of interest in the case, who is already behind bars in another location on separate charges.

The girls' father was John Lyon, a popular radio personality and performer....

Sure hoping this will bring some real answers about what happened to the sisters -- and, possibly, since they say this suspect traveled extensively, shed light on a few more cases from the same time frame.

This was one of the first cases that reeled me in when I logged onto WS's back in 2004. I wonder if Fred C will be the name we hear tomorrow.

Detectives plan a press conference for Tuesday morning to identify the person of interest and renew their pleas for tips about the girls' disappearance.

They are specifically interested in speaking to anyone who will be able to give them details about the sex offender's whereabouts in the time leading up to and shortly after March 25, 1975, according to the Post.

38 years is a long time to remember times and dates of other people comings and goings.
The article does not seem like he has been pinned down per say ,but that he is worth a closer look-see.
Still very encouraging .

This is frightening. I wonder how many other young girls were snatched by this SOB

Anxiously awaiting for the news conference. Curious to see how much he resembles the sketch. I know it was years ago but some features perhaps remained the same.
