Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

some of the comments on wfmz are interesting. its too bad we didn't get an alert or some people around here I'm sure would have been outside collectively looking around even in the bad weather. I wouldn't have minded driving around or telling a few people I know that have good weather vehicles to be on the look out. I hope he's found ok...

Silver Alert Supplemental Proposal in U.S. Senate

    http://articles.mcall.com/2014-02-10...alert-dementia

The article illustrated actual, documented needs for at-risk seniors.

"Pennsylvania has a Missing and Endangered Person Alert program."

IMO, the challenge always becomes obtaining the proper approval/authorization in a timely manner.

The U.S. Senate Measure, S.1814, is currently in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Supposedly there were people out searching the area today but the lack of updates is really frustrating.

This man went missing back in August and was found the next day. I'm praying he's found alive, but with how the weather has been in the area I'm losing hope.

A friend of mine shared this post on Facebook from a family member of his:

    Mohrsville Whiskertons · Temple University
I just came upon this site tonight after another day of searching and am grateful to read every post. Not able to sleep for these few hrs before starting again, so posting instead. The elderly man in this report is my father. Just want to say to everyone following this story so closely, to those who have expressed such genuine care and kindness, we are indebted to you. We were running out of hope after the first night (Thursday) because of the weather conditions but our father still needs us, so THANK YOU. Richard is a very, very loved person in our family and we are all sick by the current situation. As another post accurately reported, his first wandering episode occurred last summer. We had since put in all the precautions (e.g., he wore a GPS, location tracking watch daily, put loud alarms on our doors to keep him indoors, etc.). A calamity of events occurred this past week, truly a bizarre coming together of factors that would normally never happen, and this opened the window for my dad to get out on his own once again (e.g., battery failing on watch/on charger, new medication that seemed to improve his mood but may have actually caused sleep disruption, blizzard conditions so no scent to track and footprints covered behind him as he walked, barely anyone out/about to report anything, etc.).

My father wore a tracking bracelet every day, but there was still that margin of error, as in all caretaking activities, but this report didn’t seem to acknowledge that reality. Alzheimer’s Association reports that ‘60% of those with Alzheimer’s wander; and, out of these, 70% do so repeatedly.’ I can’t imagine that those who are caring for this 60% don’t have precautions in place, and that these don’t sometimes fail. The cynicism that can happen sometimes with things like this is terrible. And not helpful. And, ‘unfortunately, a bracelet cannot help Jordan now.’ A little more sensitivity would be called for here, not the best way maybe to drive a lesson home to the community, seems an insensitive choice. As I’m struggling with all the ‘what ifs’ that I know are normal at this time, this was not the type of thing I needed or deserved to read.

With regard to a better manner to get this type of information out to the community, we couldn’t more passionately agree. This has been, I would say, an almost unbearable reality to us as we’ve been searching for our father and watching the time go by so fast, adding up the hours he’s been out in this cold and what that means to his survival. We needed as many people as possible to be on the lookout from the second we found him missing and made our report. If I remember correctly, it was quite a bit of time (maybe an hour and a half or more after police arrived) before I was even asked to sign anything to declare him a missing person, one eligible for the MEPA alert (Missing Endangered Person Alert, believe is PA’s Silver Alert, below) which gets it to the media. We were kept at the house waiting to 'file' this and I was frantic, jumping out of my skin. I called ABC and NBC directly to get it on the more main broadcasts, as had heard that it was only on the local news channel (WFMZ 69 news, channel 9) later in the day Thursday. My husband was wondering why he didn’t get a text alert also and asked police why they couldn’t interrupt programming for maybe a few seconds (Emergency Broadcast) within this and nearby townships. In some states, Silver Alerts do a reverse 911, where they notify all residents within a certain radius of the last sighting so the whole community has a chance to help if they can. We don’t have that here. We needed a better way to get the word out, some better safety nets. We truly fear for the worst now. Some links found after a brief search about MEPA, etc.

Better start out again today. Thank you again so very much for looking for him with us and for your prayers.
