TX - Pre-K Student Brings Handgun to School
"AUSTIN, Texas - A pre-kindergarten student brought a handgun to school, where it was seized by a fifth-grader and turned over to the principal, school district officials said Tuesday.
The 5-year-old reportedly displayed the loaded weapon outside the Blanton Elementary School cafeteria where students were gathered before class. The fifth-grader recognized it was real and took it to the principal."
Man oh man, how come parents don't keep those things locked up???

You know, I'm a firm believer that in many cases if kids want to get at something, it doesn't matter what parents do to prevent it. Granted, there's not enough info about this yet to make any kind of fair determination on what kind of precautions the parents did or did not make. My kids are 3 and 6, and while I'm not against guns I've asked my husband not to keep any in our home, particularly while the kids are still young. So far, he's been okay with storing them in the gun cases of family members who don't have children living with them.
I'm just not sure, in this day and age, you can ensure that a child "can't get to" somethings.

true, kids are bound and determined to get at things... but maybe keeping handguns in a metal combination style safe with the kids not being able to know the combination or how to unlock it might be a good idea?
