MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WKYT) - The snake-handling pastor starring on the reality show "Snake Salvation," has died from a snake bite, according to Middlesboro Police.

Police believe Jamie Coots died after a rattlesnake bit his right hand during a church service Sunday night.

Coots was found dead in his home about 10 p.m. after refusing medical help, according to police.

Coots was best known for his starring role on National Geographic's show "Snake Salvation." The reality show highlights the snake handling practice at his church in Bell County.

WKYT spoke to Coots about a year ago, after he was stopped in Tennessee where police found several rattlesnakes and copperheads in his car.

I try not to criticize anyone else's choices, but this 'Snake Salvation' just takes the cake. I hope no impressionable children were anywhere around this so-called 'church'.
It should be shut down.

The father-of-two was known for practicing an extreme and rare Christian tradition of snake handling, based on an interpretation of the King James Bible, Mark 16: 17-18, which reads: 'And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.'

Is it just snakes they've adopted from this verse or do they drink deadly poisons as well?

The same thing happened to another pastor in 2012:

'Serpent-Handling' West Virginia Pastor Dies From Snake Bite
May 30, 2012

A "serpent-handling" West Virginia pastor died after his rattlesnake bit him during a church ritual, just as the man had apparently watched a snake kill his father years before.

Pentecostal pastor Mark Wolford, 44, hosted an outdoor service at the Panther Wildlife Management Area in West Virginia Sunday, which he touted on his Facebook page prior to the event.
...
Wolford said watched his own father die at the age of 39 after a rattlesnake bit him during a similar service.

I just can't find it in me to feel much sadness in cases like this.

I don't have sympathy for people who mess with dangerous animals. Kind of like the running of the bulls or bull fighting. You get trampled/horned/etc. and IMO, you deserve it.

Same as a circus/zoo when an animal has had enough and lashes out.

Humans get zero sympathy from me with any of it.

You took your chances, and well, your luck ran out I guess.

:dunno:

I don't find snake handling any crazier than believing God made Eve out of someone else's rib.

I grew up in a state in the Deep South. Not really proud of it, but I didn't choose my circumstances of birth or adoption. Far south of the Kentucky town where the latest fatality due to snakebite happened,
there was/ is a town not too far from the city I lived in for 30 years which was nationally infamous for 1) Mass hangings of young black men for alleged rape of a white girl earlier in history 2) A big old junk sale in the town square fairly often- it is a rusty pile of junk and hound dogs and a few mules and people come from many states away to see the spectacle. 3) Being home to " Unclaimed Baggage" which is, or at least used to be, a wonderful place to rummage and 4) For very closed off sects of snake handling " churches". I use the term " church" loosely here.

I've identified the town without naming it, so if anyone in the same state posts here, then you know where I'm talking about. :) The snake handling sect used to stay up in the hills.. Stayed to themselves and buried their dead snake handlers in private. Then the media came, 20/20 or 60 Minutes or both and more came, and the town became nationally infamous for the snake handlers. I personally think the town is cursed with some strange kind of inbreeding or strange belief system which is handed down generation to generation. There are also frequent '"ghost sightings' in this town. It truly is a wretched place, IMO.

I grew up hearing and reading Bible stories and praying. I am a born- again Christian. My God is one of mercy, and also warnings for His people. One of the things the Bible says is NOT to tempt God. There is the story of Jesus being tempted by Satan in the wilderness.... Over and over, Satan offered a fasting and weak human all the riches of the world- if he would only bow down to Satan. Jesus triumphed over Satan but warned us that Satan is loose in the world. The snake- handlers seem to worship a life form which has been associated with Satan since the book of Genesis in the garden of Eden-- snakes.

The Bible says " God is not mocked". My parents were much closer to knowing what the snake- handlers did than I ever knew, because it was a HUGE thing in that one town when they were young. Back then, novelties were a rarity I guess, so people knew what was going on behind closed doors.
My parents talked to me about the snake-handlers, a few of whom were quasi- famous or infamous and the patriarchs of families who were brought up doing that with snakes.

I was taught that it is evil to taunt God, to test God or to test one's faith in a public and dangerous way.
Each one of us has the ability to pray to God and His Son Jesus for faith, and strength, but we do not have the right to demand it.

I rejoice when a snake- handler dies. Because right there is the person's testimony to the entire group that man's faith is NOT strong enough- we are filled with the Holy Spirit and we do our works not in public venues such as dancing around with poisonous snakes. Christians do good works to help OTHERS and glorify his name.

Nothing about handling poisonous snakes in an altered state of consciousness ( the dancing, moaning and speaking in tongues that accompanies the snake- handling) is for the glory of God. It is for the glory of the person or people doing the snake handling.

If I had not grown up with great instruction from my parents who used this town in the Heart of Dixie to teach me about idolatry and false prophecy, as well as some other sins, then I would not have such a hard heart about it, I guess.

The practice is the practice of fools, not Christians. I do not weep for their dead. I weep for those too blind to see and get out alive, and find Jesus in their hearts. He is my savior. A writhing pile of rattlesnakes are not anything but reptiles which belong in their natural habitat or shot because of their dangers to animals and humans.

I had no idea this practice had spread beyond the small town where it started over 60 years ago. I think that's a shame.. But I grieve not for the loss of any of the snake- handlers. They MOCK God.

This is all my opinion from living less than 35 miles away from the strangely named " churches" which practiced snake- handling as their special private entitlement to spiritual ecstasy and their mortal agony. I'm sorry if it sounds harsh. I've had MANY years to form informed opinions on the subject, and it sickens me that religion can be so perverted.

ETA: In the town which is known for extremely old sects of snake handling " churches", there ARE children exposed to this way of life from babes in arms onward. Mostly, the snake handlers ARE long- standing families. The " tradition" of snake handling is passed down from generation to generation. The kids are obviously brainwashed into a warped normalcy. No normal person would dance around with venomous snakes unless they had grown up with the practice and considered it an " honor" to do so. The sects which do this are extremely closed off and secretive. If you or I drove up to their " service", we might be escorted off the woodsy property with a loaded gun. I think this is because there are minor children present and the parents know what they are doing is illegal. Putting their children in harm's way deliberately.

Its a matter of Faith.
And I have perfect Faith that handling poisonous snakes is an excellent way to get bit and die.
Kind of a No-Brainer.

Doh. Surprised he lived as long as he did. I just hope the snake wasn't put down for biting him.

It wasn't… TMZ reported that the family plans to use it this coming Saturday… the son is now taking over as pastor. *smh*

What they are doing is unlawful, but the police chief in that area refuses to enforce the law. This family is not new to unlawful actions, regarding snakes… in the past a county attorney has tried to get them prosecuted, but a judge refused to get on board with things, saying it wouldn't deter people from carrying on with the practice. It's like, nobody cares…

I ponder how many children are being exposed to the venomous snakes, as part of church indoctrination. Surely, such actions would be considered far too dangerous to have kids involved…

Be careful wishing for gov't to ban things, and oppress people, especially when it comes to religions. It might come back and, uh, bite you<RIMSHOT>.
:floorlaugh:

I wonder how many parishoners have died of snakebites, vs, say, riding motorcycles or smoking cigarettes?

Having said all that, this guy played a stupid game, and won a massively stupid prize.

I wish there were "frag grenade handlers", or "chainsaw jugglers", now THAT would be worth tuning in for!!

<<snipped>>

LOL my husband used to work there for TVA. This is about 25- 30 years ago when Hwy 72 was a two lane.

Townsfolk would stare, mouths gaped wide open, any where we went at the sight of the strange beings from elsewhere. Walking into the Liberty Diner- sudden shocked silence, forks stopped halfway to mouth as we aliens entered.

I did like Trade Day.

And with all that religion never once, not once did anyone of them attempt to save my soul!

Just the staring openly in our face even when we stared directly back.

Not to distract from any criticism of that ignorant hell hole but I think the snake handling emerged in White Oak TN. But they probably hail from the S. mountain!

According to TWRA who seized the snakes they were sick, had mites and in poor health most had to be put down because they were too neglected to recover.

Not very sporting to handle a half dead reptile and call it a success. I’d like to see then take up one of those healthy warm rattlers at the TN Aquarium and see what happens.

It is cruelty to animals and that, imo, is not godly act.

In this article it tells about all the noise and music the sound waves of which are unsettling to a reptile.

Then there are pictures of them wagging around the poor snakes with their bodies unsupported. Snakes are really delicate and their rib bones break easily.

On one episode, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency cited Coots for trafficking snakes through the state. A few weeks after the series finale, Hamblin was also charged with a misdemeanor.

Wildlife officers escorted him to his church, where they confiscated 53 venomous snakes. Many were emaciated and diseased, the officers said, and more than half died. The rest were later euthanized.

All IMO

Should be stiffer penalties grrr!

The states of Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee have passed laws against the use of venomous snakes and/or other reptiles that endangers the lives of others, or without a permit. The Kentucky law specifically mentions religious services; in Kentucky snake handling is a misdemeanor and punishable by a $50 to $100 fine.[11] Most snake handling, therefore, takes place in the homes of worshipers, which circumvents the process of attempting to obtain a government permit for the practice. Law enforcement usually ignores it unless and until they are specifically called in, which does not usually happen unless a death has resulted.

If anyone's interested, NatGeo is airing the first episode of "snake salvation" to be filmed after pastor Coots won his Darwin award, 10pm ET.

Yes, they drink arsenic out of Mason jars, saw it on a documentary on TV. I think it was this same "church". They get bit by poisonous snakes and drink arsenic. What do they think is going to happen? :notgood:

They are around, especially in the Appalachian Regions. I grew up with some around. They would not talk with outsiders about ANYTHING. But, they are there.

In case anyone is interested here is Part 1 of an interview with Mr. Coots, more on youtube. I can't say anything about their choice of religion b/c I have opinions about all religion and the damage to psychology, life, or bodily harm for many, and it is the United States where all are free to believe what they want. If it keeps them alive, or if it kills them, it is one of the few Countries where there is freedom to choose your religion, and this is not the only religion that can cause some to die because of what they feel and think is what they believe and the word of their God. Some are religions specific to the U.S.
