SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -Springfield police say they found a body during the night that likely belonged to abducted girl Hailey Owens. They also have a suspect in custody...

Police worked "multiple" crime scenes all night at 1538 E. Stanford St. and other places as they investigated the kidnapping and murder of 10-year-old Hailey. She was taken from the 3200 block of West Lombard Street as she walked from a friend's home to her home two blocks away late Tuesday afternoon. The family lives in the 3300 block of West Page Street.

At mid-morning Wednesday, police confirmed another crime scene related to this case is at Dutch Maid Laundry, 526 S. National Ave., near Elm Street. That's a laundromat. FBI agents were looking through the washers and dryers there. They were there from about 3 a.m. until about 10:30 a.m., when the business reopened...

"All I can say right now is I miss her and I love her," said her father, Marcus Owens, in a telephone interview late Wednesday morning.

Hailey's father and mother, Stacey Owens, are divorced.

The last image most of Hailey Owens’ classmates will have of her is of a smiling, laughing girl dancing at Friday’s Valentine party. After the treats and the passing out of holiday cards, Hailey’s fourth-grade teacher put on some music. And the parent helpers — including Hailey’s mother — got to see the kids go at it.

“They got to shake their groove thing, and Hailey was in the midst of it all,” said Gary Tew, principal of Westport Elementary School in Springfield. “That’s what the kids are going to remember about her. And her mom got to see her in that light, too.”

"She's Springfield's child. Parents in this community realize this could be their child, and I think that's what makes it hit a little bit closer to home," said Clay Adams of Greenlawn Funeral Home.

Adams is planning the remembrance services for the 10-year-old girl who was abducted near her home and killed within four hours in Springfield last week. Adams said the child's family feels the overwhelming support pouring in from around the nation.

Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 2210 W. Republic Road, is opening its doors for the crowds expected at the visitation on Tuesday. The goal of the service is to give every person affected by the tragedy a chance to mourn and to celebrate Hailey's life.

The Missouri Victims Compensation Fund is covering for most of the service costs, according to Adams, with Greenlawn Funeral Home paying for all other expenses.

Visitation is at Ridgecrest Baptist Church from 4 until 8. The funeral service will be at 2 on Wednesday, also at Ridgecrest.

Autopsy shows Hailey Owens was sexually assaulted after kidnapping

POSTED: 11:36 AM CDT Apr 22, 2014 UPDATED: 03:58 PM CDT Apr 22, 2014

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -The Greene County prosecuting attorney filed a motion on Monday to amend the charges against Craig Wood, 46, of Springfield, to add charges of first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy for the kidnapping and murder of Hailey Owens on Feb. 18. Wood has been in jail since that day for the murder of the 10-year-old girl.

The documents filed in court with the amended charges say they're based on autopsy results received on Monday from the Greene County Medical Examiner's Office. This is the first time that investigators have officially said Hailey might have been sexually assaulted before her death, after she was kidnapped off a street near her home in western Springfield. A state Children's Division document made public had revealed that investigators suspected that, however.

Records from the state's Children's Division, released at the News-Leader's request, do not go into detail about the allegations, and some sections are redacted, such as a part that explains how officials know about abuse. The report notes two "maltreatments" reported. One is her death and the other is "sexual acts/exploitation," in relation to her abduction on Feb. 18.

A list of questions listed under the sexual acts/exploitation section includes one that says: "Do you suspect child has been sexually abused?" to which the reporter answers, "Yes." The report was completed on Feb. 21. The section that explains who reported the information is redacted.
Parents of Hailey Owens, murdered in Springfield, sue her accused killer

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The parents of a 10-year-old southwest Missouri girl who was kidnapped and killed last month have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the man accused of killing her.

Hailey’s parents, Stacey Barfield and Markus Owens, are seeking money to cover ongoing costs incurred by her death, according to the lawsuit filed last week. They say they are also suing to punish Wood and deter him or anyone else from engaging in similar conduct.

Judge says there's enough evidence for Craig Wood to stand trial
Posted: Friday, 23 May 2014 5:54AM

During the four hour hearing, a 911 call was played from a woman who saw the kidnapping of Owens. Prosecutors also say they found several pornographic photos and stories about children, one of them was named Hailey.

Later in the hearing, an FBI agent testified that a folder in Wood’s bedroom had handwritten pornographic stories. Agent Jonathan Tucker said one story was about someone named Hailey. Wood’s attorney objected to the introduction of the stories as evidence because he said there was no proof that Wood wrote them. The judge overruled his objection after hearing arguments from Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson.

Tucker also testified a folder had Pleasant View Middle School class schedules and what looked like pictures of student identification cards. In another binder labeled Hillcrest High School, agents said they found pornographic images.

Neighbor Michelle Edwards testified she saw the girl walking along West Lombard Street when Wood, driving a "tannish-gold Ford Ranger," stopped and grabbed her.

"It sounded like he asked her where Springfield Street was," said Edwards, who was sitting in her open garage when the incident occurred. "He said, 'Hey, come here a minute' ... (then) he lunged out of his truck ... then grabbed her and threw her in the passenger side of his truck and then took off."

Edwards, who sounded distraught on the 911 recording, pleaded with the operator to "please help her (Hailey)."

Prosecutors said the "stories" were fantasized depictions of violent sexual acts against young girls and were relevant to the case over defense objections.

At one point, Defense Attorney Patrick Berrigan and Greene County Prosecutor Dan Patterson argued at the bench over the merit of the writings being introduced into evidence.

Berrigan laughed quietly at one of the cases Patterson cited.

"I don't think this is anything to laugh about," Patterson said.

"Those are child sex cases," replied Berrigan.

"This is a child sex case," Patterson said.

Jury selection begins in the murder case of Hailey Owens

Lawyers tapped a pool of 500 potential jurors from Platte County, north of Kansas City, Lawyers trimmed that pool to about half after asking a series of questions about the death penalty. Then, the court sent out requests to several dozen jurors.
The death penalty remains an option in the case. A judge in September denied a request to throw out the death penalty punishment in the case. His attorneys argued the death penalty is unconstitutional. The judge disagreed.
