SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield police say a body thought to be that of a missing 10-year-old girl has been found in southwest Missouri. Police Chief Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams says search crews found a body they believe is Hailey Owens inside a suspect's Springfield home on Wednesday.

Authorities arrested 45-year-old Craig Michael Wood in connection with the abduction and death of the girl on Tuesday, CBS affiliate KOLR reports. Wood, a coach and teacher's aide at a school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, is jailed on suspicion of first-degree murder. (continued at the link)

In regard to CMW's trust fund. Let me play devil's advocate. Let's say he has full access to his $1M trust fund. And gets his attorneys, DNA specialists, Mental Health specialists, you name it. How long do you think it would take to eat that up? Not long. He'll run out of money. When he's convicted he'll come back on appeal and say it was because he couldn't afford to keep up with prosecutions might. And get one. Who wants that? And who ends up with the $1M? A bunch of attorneys that charged retail.

I say let the trust alone. The house is in all the family names. The crime happened there. Let Hailey's family sue (the family) in civil court for wrongful death and let the dollars fall closer to where they should. JMO

This case makes me think of the David Westerfield case- older man, no prior known history of crimes against children or violent crimes - and then commits a brutal abduction and murder of a child.

While older first time offenders are undoubtedly rare, I wonder how many are really out there. I haven't come across much writing on that topic. If anyone has any info, I'd be interested in reading it.

There are some interesting statistics in this article. While it doesn't discuss age and first time offenses, I think the information is interesting.

ETA: I'm having no luck finding information on age and first time offenses. There's got to be a study out there somewhere!

Hailey Owens' funeral service is today, Wednesday, 2/26/14, at 2 pm.

It has been stated that Hailey's favorite colors were pink and purple.

IMO in regards to the trust fund that is being talked about, I think it is his parents will where he is named a beneficiary. I can see why his parents have hired an attorney, to protect their assets in this case. If they have it set up as a irrevocable or revocable trust they will probably get him off as a named beneficiary. As tragic as this is, his parents or any other named beneficiary's of their estate should not suffer in any way because of his actions.

I know getting financial compensation for the death of Hailey will be the last think on the Owen's minds right now but if his parents part own the house would they not be partly liable if a crime happens there? Sorry if this has already been discussed.

It was upsetting yesterday thinking this time last week this monster took Hailey. It must have been the worst week of Hailey's families lives and the nightmare will most likely never be over with a trial most likely happening in the years to come.

I just wondered do you have a crime victims compensation fund in America where you get damages or the family of a victim gets damages when they are victims of a crime? We do in the UK but it is not a massive amount of money.

Yes, but like the UK it's not massive.

In regards to the Springfield 3, could CW at his age at the time take on 3 women? Be able to kill 3 women alone? Could he have known the guy that was a suspect at the time? Don't recall his name at this time? Yes I also read the rumor that they may have been buried below Cox hospital but I thought there was some sort of test done in the area and that it came back inconclusive (spelling may be wrong). But I agree that a 45 year old man does not go from acting normal 2 hours prior to her kidnapping and murder by just "snapping". He has to have some other "skeletons" in his closet before this day. And I have been wondering, when the police entered his home and discovered all the guns and photos/DVDS, did he never receive visitors that would have seen this stuff too and questioned him??

CW was about 24 at the time, having started college in fall of 1986 (forgot when his birthdate was, sorry), with a delay in graduating due to the substance abuse program and time off from college. I think he'd have been old enough, though taking on three women for a first offense seems pretty bold. That's why I was wondering if he and Cox had maybe met up. Cox's conviction in Florida was for raping and strangling a 19-yr old girl in the late 1980s. Springfield was his "hometown" - so it's not unlikely that he knew CW (I'll look up their ages and check on possible school attendance connections, though I'm guessing he's at least a bit older than CW).

In the interviews I've read with LE, they say they believe it could have been done by one man alone, in that no one has come forward with info to claim the rather substantial reward $ being offered. But at this point, it's all conjecture; they also admit it could have been by two men (some witness reports of 2 concrete workers driving around in a truck were also considered).

Still, I'd be curious about tracking down the MSU and party-ing portion of CW's past--he described himself as quite the partier, which is what led to his alcoholism and his dropping out for the substance abuse program. It's not too long a stretch to think he could have been in attendance at MSU and area parties again once he returned to the trigger zone to finish his degree, and been acquainted with some of the folk at the two parties the girls attended that night in 1992, one several blocks south of the college. Even though it was technically a high school graduation party, a lot of these kids were friends and friends of each other's siblings, and the party scene would have overlapped with college-age kids--especially if those underage kids were interested in consuming alcohol. Suzie was described by witnesses as running with some 'dubious characters' and also as being somewhat inebriated that night.

I still think and wonder about the Springfield 3. Would love to have an ending to that one.
As for CMW I'm guessing it could be possible but feeling doubtful.

Parolees are usually paroled to a halfway house, aren't they? So Robert Cox, paroled from FL and returning immediately to his hometown of Springfield, MO, would likely have been at a halfway house there, right? Probably working his marking underground utilities job while staying there.

I wonder what halfway house that was, how many were in Springfield in 1992, and if there are still records concerning that?

Yes, it's a sad case. And really strange (in this day and age) that there are no definitive clues to 3 people's disappearance.

Does anyone know if there was a good turnout for her visitation yesterday in Springfield? It seems MSM gave them some space for it. I appreciate that. It's about time.

I heard on the radio this morning that he was being kept away from the other prisoners at Greene County Jail. Puke!!

Yeah, it's a stretch. But there are some connections worth checking into. Marshfield (where he went to high school) is in Webster County. Rural Webster County is the county where LE were tipped off once or twice that the girls were buried.

I'm wondering if when the family lived in Marshfield if it was in the rural area? (Were they raising cattle and trotter horses then as well?)

Hello Everyone,

I have been following this forum and thread and a new poster. I live about 20 miles from Springfield and just a few miles from Ash Grove. Just last year, we lost Audriaunna Horton in Golden City, Mo. Within an hour she was abducted, body found and murderer arrested. Now, Hailey. It is disgusting and just heartbreaking. CW is very perplexing. 45y/o and a relatively clean record. Has someone been using money to clean up after him? It seems as though everything else has been provided for him. It seems he felt very confident in taking Hailey to his home - knowing the clean up that would be involved? It appears that taking her there was not out of desperation because that was his plan as evidenced by the prior purchases of bleach. I am wondering if anyone would happen to know the specifics for JDW's teaching career? I am presuming CW was pulled into the Springfield educational system through his retired teacher (social studies/coach) father. On Facebook, JDW is referenced (I think) as faculty at Missouri State University. When questioned by LE, one of CW's alibis was that he was driving near Missouri State? I have heard "talk" that JDW retired from the Springfield educational system. If so, which schools was he affiliated? Also, at Missouri Case.net - the defendant's address is shown as Ash Grove - not Springfield - why? CW's role as supervisor for kids in trouble (suspensions) is quite worrisome. Many times, it is the troubled ones that are looking for a "friend". Now that CW is locked up, I'm hoping others will feel secure enough to come forward to help the prosecution.

My apologies for rambling, thank you in advance for listening to the wheels turn.
