U.S. Navy Commander Alphonso Doss, 44, was slain at a hotel in Orange Park about two weeks ago. They thought the death was suspicious but now it has been labeled as a murder. They are not saying how he was murdered. Was on temporary assignment with a technical training program. He had family in the area but was staying at the hotel.

Article from 2 years ago when Alphonso was promoted to Commander. At that time he was married and had one child.

He is married to the former Yolinda Denise Hunter, also a 1987 honor graduate of Ruleville Central High. They have one daughter, Alexis.

In 2006 Doss was ordered by the Deputy Secretary of the Navy to assist in conducting the Annual Review Boards for suspected enemy-combatants held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. It was during this tour that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed admitted to Doss’ team that he was one of the masterminds behind 9/11.

The victim was leading a troubled life. He was going though a "bitter divorce" after 22 years of marriage.

Doss’s recent troubles included a foreclosure, a DUI conviction and subsequent treatment and the break-up of his marriage, records and acquaintances said. He had been attending a program since October for alcoholism and other trouble

Something is very wrong here. I used to live in the area, and this is a dump fairly near the base. I can't imagine why he chose not to stay in officers' quarters on the base (there is always room for a Commander) for a nominal sum and instead stayed in this former Holiday Inn or Ramada (I can't remember which it used to be, it was dumpy years ago too). I also don't understand why such a long period of time before announcing this was a homicide.
 
Orange Park police didn’t reveal they were investigating the still-unsolved slaying of Cmdr. Alphonso Mortimer Doss, 44, for two weeks because there was no pressing need to do so, Police Chief Gary Goble told the Times-Union Thursday morning.

Goble said he is confident in the probe’s progress and put out a brief news release Wednesday only upon an inquiry from a television reporter based on a tip. The news release and a heavily redacted police report said a woman discovered Doss in Room 183 at the Astoria Hotel Suites near Jacksonville Naval Air Station and that an autopsy found he was killed. Few other details were released.

“Sometimes when you get things in the news, it doesn’t help you,” Goble said. “Sometimes you’ve got to keep it close to the vest.”

They lost the house because they failed to pay $1,369 in HOA and related lawyer fees. wow He also had been living at the Astoria for several months. He went to AA meetings with the Deli owner's son.

I don't know why a murder constitutes "no pressing need" for the police to notify anyone, but that would be par for the course in Orange Park.

That property, and the properties across the street, attract transients - across the street is a Days Inn and some other motel and it's right off I-295 (easy on, easy off). Since he wasn't driving, he could have met up with someone in the parking lot or coming/going to a convenience store. It wouldn't be unknown for a prostitute or two to be operating in the area.

I know there was a bad divorce going on, but I think this might end up to be more of a chance meeting type of deal than anything related to his divorce.
 
I'm still very bothered by this murder and there has been almost nothing on it in the Jax news except the same rehashed info. One new piece is this, and he's murdered 4 days later?

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- His last words are recorded on a voicemail left for a close friend just four days before Alphonso Doss was killed.

"I need somebody who understands, so call me back," said Doss. Just days before that, he sent a cry for help. "I've got a question to ask you. Not about you but a situation I'm dealing with, so if I can't talk to you tonight, give me a holler on another day, but I need your opinion on something," said Doss.

From michmi's link, Alphonso Doss was being forced into early retirement due to the 2012 DUI. He was trying to get his life back on track and was in therapy.

Also the friend says Doss was staying in a "shady area" and was "very social" and would talk to anyone.

In the video the friend says Alphonso sent her more than 150 messages many from his room. The friend felt fear and desperation in his voice in his final messages.

3 different agencies are working his murder.

Still keeping this all very quiet.....buried in the news......also says wife found him and all the original articles claim housekeeping of the hotel found him. Doesn't sound like any other agency involved, either. BBM below

Goble told the Times-Union Tuesday that investigators recently received some lab results from the crime scene and have at least two people of interest. Goble said he hopes to soon announce news in the 2-month-old case, but he wouldn’t elaborate or discuss a motive.

Doss’ family didn’t learn that he was slain until after his Feb. 20 funeral in Jacksonville.

The Florida Times-Union has gone to a subscription format, so I can't post the link here, but an update was given there on May 13, 2014.

Still no arrest(s), Cmdr. Doss's father says the detective working the case (this is Orange Park Police, not any military investigation) called him earlier in the week to update him; last word was that the police were sending evidence returned to them from one lab to another lab for "verification". The father also says there is only 1 suspect now.

The only real new piece of information - they quoted someone across the street who would only give his first name who said he used to see Cmdr. Doss buying liquor at a neighboring store - so evidently he was still drinking.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office arrested 44-year-old Yolinda Doss, 33-year-old Ronnie Wilson II, and 28-year-old Anthony Washington.
Deputies found the body of Cmdr. Doss in a room at the Astoria Hotel in Orange Park in February.

He had been strangled.

The motive was money, according to authorities. Doss served in the Navy since 1987 and was close to retirement.
"We believe their goal was to benefit financially from this crime," said Orange Park Police Chief Gary Goble. "We believe it was substantial in life insurance," he said. "Commander Doss was a Navy veteran and had life insurance policies."

It sounds like 1st degree to me too.
 
She was married to him for 22 years, and she could murder him for his life insurance money. I wonder if he ever knew he was married to such a ruthless, calculating monster.
He probably realised it towards the end, his marriage had collapsed, he was being forced into early retirement, his life had stated to unravel, that is usually an indication that something is wrong, lack of support in his home life, he was married to a self centered person, not a supportive person.
I hope they get very long sentences. :jail::jail::jail::jail:
 
A slain Jacksonville Navy commander’s estranged wife, her boyfriend and that man’s best friend have been charged in his February strangulation in an Orange Park motel in a failed plot she masterminded to steal more than $1 million in life insurance money, police said Tuesday.

Goble said Doss' wife served as a lookout from a parking lot for the two men, who entered her husband's room using a key provided by her and then waited for Doss to arrive. A struggle preceded Doss' death, police said.

I feel terrible for his daughter, now she essentially has no parents and I think she's only 16. I am so glad, however, that they've been arrested. My thoughts are with the family. It'll be interesting to see whether she knew the 2 men before or whether she met them in the area of the murder. There are always people roaming around that motel and the ones across the street.

I wish he'd been able to stay on base - I don't think this would have happened there.
