Connie Converse, a highly intelligent and gifted songwriter of the 1950's packed her possessions in her VW beetle in August of 1974 and drove off never to be seen again. Frustrated that her music did not "fit" in the popular music of her time, facing a surgery (non malignant fibroid tumor), she wrote good bye letters to her family and friends before departing.

A documentary movie is planned for her. Wouldn't it be grand if her disappearance was solved.

She is reported to be 5'7", 165lbs with brown hair. She was 50 years old.

Did Connie try once more for that elusive musical recognition? Maybe heading off to Nashville.....

In December of 1974, a body of a white woman, est 5'8" and est 140 lbs was found below a tramway in Gatlinburg, TN. Her clothes were neatly folding next to her. She had brown hair. Her postmortem interval was 2 months.

Good thought, but Gatlinburg is at the total opposite end of the state than Nashville. And since she was probably coming from Michigan, not on the way.

Is there a thread for the UID though? The place she was found is not easy to get to and was even harder to get to in the 1970s. (No real airport, no mass transit into the city, etc.)

I recall that she had planned a difficult trip to see her mother, who I assume still lived in New Hampshire. Her mother was a teetotaler. If she has spent time in Memphis or Nashville, she may have stopped to see the mountains.

I could not find a thread for the UID, feel free to make one!!

She appeared to always have on glasses. No mention of those.

I wondered about the glasses also. Were they missed at the crime scene, carried off by weather or vermin? Or was she far sighted using them only for close up work?? HMMM......

Such an interesting woman
I agree she most likely passed over in 1974
She didnt seem like the type who would write letters and disappear knowing it would concern people, unless it was her final farewell.

Tennessee is not on the route to New Hampshire from Michigan.

Connie had spent 6 months on a sabbatical, just prior to her disappearance. Could she have returned? CAUTION MAY CONTAIN POST MORTEM PICTURE.

The nose looks different to me, but the UK woman looks like she had hers broken so that could explain it. The fact that she was wearing men's clothing and Ms. Converse seemed to wear clothing that was more male styled in the pictures we had, make me think it's worth a close look.

The ear comparison was striking, but when I converted the Height 191 cms that is way to tall for Connie. 191 cms converts to 6'3", so unless that was entered wrong it would not have been Connie.

Connie was so close to her family, I really feel something tragic happened in a short time period after her departure. Unless, and I have know reason to believe this, she dramatically changed her lifestyle and was just to ashamed to let them know.

Several articles with photos. Lots of info is from family members.

I wonder what she meant by:

addressed to "Anyone Who Ever Asks:" reads,

"To survive at all, I expect I must drift back down through the other half of the twentieth twentieth, which I already know pretty well, the hundredth hundredth, which I have only read and heard about. I might survive there quite a few years - who knows?"

"Since Herman and Dzula heard "One by One" on Deitch's broadcast in 2004, many people have been asking what happened to Connie Converse. Still no one knows. Dzula and Herman attempted to track her down, but had no luck. A relative hired a private investigator and found nothing. A Chronicle search could conclude only that Converse's Social Security number has not been registered as a death. If she committed suicide, as her farewell note hints and as most of her family tends to believe, her body was either never found or not identified. If alive today, she would be 85."
