Dead Mississippi man begins breathing in embalming room, coroner says

(CNN) -- Even in the Bible Belt, coroners don't use the word "miracle" lightly.

But Holmes County, Mississippi, Coroner Dexter Howard has no qualms using the word for the resurrection, as it were, of Walter Williams, who was declared dead Wednesday night.

Howard received the call from Williams' hospice nurse, who told Howard that the 87-year-old had passed away. A family member called as well, saying the same, Howard said.

Howard and Byron Porter from Porter & Sons Funeral Home in Lexington, Mississippi, drove to Williams' home to collect the body for funeral preparations. Howard checked Williams' pulse about 9 p.m. and pronounced him dead...

I love the way Brian Porter, manager of the funeral home where the embalming is carried out, said deadpan on cbs, "We definitely weren't going to do anything once he started kicking."

I don't know much about medicine, but he had to have suffered from the lack of circulation, don't you think???

I hope ppl understand the difference between -
- many tests for determining brain death on Jahi, as conducted by multiple licensed neurologists, including a ct-sanctioned/appted neurologist
vs
- the pulse check done by elected county official, apparently non-medically trained, who then declared a 78 y/o hospice patient dead.

Not apples and oranges, more like cucumbers and kumquats comparison.

How upsetting. The poor man was already on Hospice then had to go through that.
 
I think hospice, expectation and age are key to this. Everyone expected this gentleman to die and nobody thought to look too hard when expectations were fulfilled.

I'm very glad this gentleman came out kicking because it's a reminder that preconceived expectations can be a dangerous thing......No connection to this case at all whatsoever, except that the serial killer Dr Harold Shipman in the UK used preconceptions that older people do 'just die' to get away with killing an estimated 215 patients over 25 years - many of whom were perfectly healthy.

I guess that my point is that I'd like to see seniors always receiving the same levels of care, attention and relevant questioning as other groups. I think Bob Harrod would have benefited from that if they did, because the 'wandered off that's just what old people do' theory would never have held for so long.
 
In this link one reporter says 'Doctors have no medical explanation for what happened' and then the presenter back in the studio just pipes up with what I think we've all been thinking here.

Ya'll, look up pacemakers and subsequent visits. No bringing the dead. This may be an embellishment on reality. ;)
 
'Dead' Mississippi man who kicked out of body bag has died.

A Mississippi man pronounced dead last month and put in a body bag only to come alive just before embalming, has now died, a coroner said on Thursday.

Walter Williams, 78, died at about 1 a.m. local time in Lexington, two weeks after shocking people when he started breathing and kicking at a funeral home where he was taken after being declared dead, said Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard.

"I think he's gone this time," Williams' nephew, Eddie Hester, told a local television station.

Williams had been receiving hospice care at home for end-stage cardiovascular disease and other ailments before his near-death experience on February 27. The coroner mistakenly declared him dead after neither he nor nurses could find a pulse.

The Mississippi man who was found alive in a body bag late last month has died.

Walter Williams, 78, made headlines on Feb. 28 when he was found moving in a body bag moments before he was to be embalmed. The coroner had earlier pronounced him dead two days earlier when he could not find a pulse, possibly due to the man’s pacemaker.

“I think he’s gone this time,” Williams’ nephew, Eddie Hester, told a local television station according to Reuters.
