Police said Kaitlyn spent Friday night at that trailer with a child in the family.

"It's our belief she was murdered inside the trailer," said Dallas police Senior Cpl. Max Geron.

Cpl. Geron said the bedroom where Kaitlyn was sleeping was next to the one in which Mr. Long was staying. Other family members were home at the time of the slaying, Cpl. Geron said, but he did not say if there were any witnesses to the crime.

"This is still the early stage of the investigation," he said.

Mr. Geron said the murder was "sexually motivated" but would not comment on whether Kaitlyn was sexually assaulted.

A neighbor who had helped search a trailer park for a missing 11-year-old girl Saturday was charged Sunday in her slaying.

The body of Kaitlyn Briana Smith was found Saturday morning under a vacant trailer two lots down from the one where her family lives. She had been beaten and strangled, police said.

Police said that as they scoured the Rylie area neighborhood and talked to residents Saturday, Steven Lynn Long, 33, displayed "suspicious behavior" that made him a suspect. Police declined to say what the behavior was.

Mr. Geron said the murder was "sexually motivated" but would not comment on whether Kaitlyn was sexually assaulted.

Good God...when will it all stop??!!! :(

And of course he had a record
Mr. Long was convicted of attempted murder in 1991 and sentenced to 10 years probation. He was convicted of driving while intoxicated in 1993; and last year he was charged with marijuana possession and criminal mischief.
10 yrs probation for attempted murder??!! :behindbar

Steven Lynn Long told police that an alter ego named "Pretty Boy" forced him to rape and kill 11-year-old Kaitlyn Briana Smith and then dump her body under a vacant trailer.

But neighbor Janis Castro isn't buying it. She's known him for several years. He sometimes mowed her grass.

"He's got a pit bull called Pretty Boy," Ms. Castro said. "Steve was not crazy. He had a right mind."

Court halts execution of convicted child killer who claims intellectual disability
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Monday halted the execution of a convicted child murderer who claims he’s intellectually disabled and therefore ineligible for the state’s harshest punishment.

Steven Long, 46, was set to die next Wednesday for the 2005 rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Dallas County. Courts had previously rejected his appeals claiming intellectual disability, but that was before the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated Texas’ methods for determining intellectual disability for death-sentenced people in March.
