First ‘smart’ pistol hits shelves in California

Expensive, but that will change in time...this could save LOTS of lives!

"The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately.

When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated."

Perhaps it would be safer for cops so their weapon doesn't work if it's taken away. But for private individuals, it's only going to be safer if the gun and watch are stored separately and that defeats the purpose of having a gun for home protection.

California already has strict laws regarding guns being locked in a safe. Can you imagine in a real emergency, like one of those kick the door down home invasion robberies that have happened in CA, a homeowner not only having to go get a gun out of a locked safe but go retrieve the watch that makes it work from a separate location. Sounds like a good gun for people who really don't want homeowners defending themselves.

Plus RFID technology isn't hard to block. Do you really want a weapon that could be hacked and made useless by someone wanting to do you harm? Guns are old school technology. The first semi-auto handgun was made in 1911. It was funny when lawmakers in Illinois proposed legislation to ban semi-auto handguns, they wanted to ban a guns from as far back as WWI.

Calif. store backs away from smart guns after outcry from 2nd Amendment activists

The California gun store that put the nation’s first smart gun on sale is facing a furious backlash from customers and gun rights advocates who fear the new technology will encroach on their Second Amendment rights if it becomes mandated.

Attacks in online forums and social networks against the Oak Tree Gun Club have prompted the store to back away from any association with the Armatix iP1 smart gun. The protests threaten the nascent smart-gun industry, which received a jolt of support recently when a group of Silicon Valley investors offered a $1 million prize for promising new technology.
