UK - Jimmy Mubenga, 46, suffocated aboard plane at Heathrow, 12 Oct 2010

Three private security guards have just been charged with manslaughter over the 2010 death of 46 year old Angolan Jimmy Mubenga. He was killed on a plane full of people at Heathrow Airport in the UK.

Jimmy was being deported back to Angola after serving a jail term in the UK, and the guards were in charge of restraining him on the plane. Reports from other passengers made pretty horrific reading at the time. Here's an original story where the security company were telling people Jimmy had been 'taken ill'.

In 2012 the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to bring charges but now they have changed their minds, saying 'There is a realistic prospect of conviction'. They will not be charging G4S, the security company, with corporate manslaughter.

Colin Kaler, 51; Terrence Hughes, 53; and Stuart Tribelnig, 38, are due to appear in court April 4th 2014.

'Deportee asked for help on flight before dying'

    http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2010/o...-dying-witness

ETA: His last words were 'I can't breathe'. Passengers came forward afterwards without being asked because they were dismayed at what they regarded as misleading stories put out by G4S and the UK government.

I listened to the link's 4 min. audio of a man who said he was a passenger on that flight (sounds like a man from southern USA?).
Said he was about 20 ft away, but it's hard for me to tell what he actually saw and heard.

Video about 'discrepancies' in Hughes' testimony to the inquest where he said he helped restrain Jimmy for 35 minutes but did not hear him say 'you're killing me. I can't breathe'. In his police statement however, he had mentioned hearing these words.

Interview with Jimmy's widow. Very sad. She is bringing up five children alone now.

'Several passengers said they heard him shouting that he could not breathe and he was crying out: They're killing me'.

'During the hearing it emerged that two of the guards - Hughes and Tribelnig - had a string of racist jokes on their phones.'

Jimmy died because his breathing was 'impeded'. I am no pathologist, but cannot help feeling that may be in some way connected to the three fully grown men sitting on top of him for over half an hour. Jimmy obviously thought that too...while he was able.

I'm sure I remember seeing some phone footage someone took of the killing on the plane, but I cannot find it now.

Just to make it clear - Jimmy had lived in the UK for 16 years with his wife and children, after being given special leave to remain. He got into a fight with another man and was sentenced to two years in prison. That is why he was being deported.

Here, reporter mentioned that sometimes detainees being deported
    fake illnesses (or seizures? paraphrasing).
It crossed my mind too, merely a possibility.

I wonder if protocol, once on board, is to have such a detainee handcuffed? Belly-shackled? Ankle cuffed?
    Otherwise physically restrained?

Three private security guards who restrained the Angolan deportee Jimmy Mubenga have been cleared of manslaughter by a jury at the Old Bailey...

Terrence Hughes, 53, Colin Kaler, 52 and Stuart Tribelnig, 39, were accused of manslaughter by forcing Mubenga’s head down and restricting his breathing as the flight prepared to take off at Heathrow airport.
