As her 5-year-old son lay dying at Westchester Medical Center with dangerous levels of sodium in his system, Lacey Spears asked a neighbor to enter her home and dispose of one of the boy's feeding bags. It contained an extreme concentration of sodium, sources said.

Spears' neighbor at the Fellowship Community in Chestnut Ridge confirmed that Spears phoned her from the medical center and asked her to get rid of the plastic pouch. The neighbor removed the bag but then called police, who are investigating whether Garnett Spears was poisoned by salt. The neighbor asked not to be named because she doesn't want to compromise the police investigation and because Fellowship Community leaders asked residents not to talk to the media about Garnett's death.

interesting. Ms Spears was a nursing student

The death of a 5-year-old New York boy whose mother chronicled his hospitalization and subsequent death on social media is being investigated by police.

Lacey Spears, 26, a single mom and former nursing student, had written about her son Garnett's lifelong struggle with health issues on Twitter, Facebook and a blog, but after she brought him into Nyack Hospital in mid-January with what appeared to be a stomach virus and his condition worsened and he transferred to Westchester Medical Center, doctors called the police, the Journal News reports.

The account that Lacey Spears gave to the world about her son’s father was that he was dead, his name was Blake and that in 2012 she and her little boy marked his tragic loss at a memorial service.

Now authorities investigating last month’s mysterious death of 5-year-old Garnett Spears of Chestnut Ridge believe his father is alive and well, sources said. Lacey Spears’ own father confirmed the man’s identity as Chris Hill, a source told The Journal News.

Hill, who lives in Spears’ former home state of Alabama, told the newspaper Thursday that “IM the real father man. If you would have seen my baby pics, you would understand.”

wow, everything was a lie. Even the dead soulmate.

It just gets stranger the more I read. I didn't see why he had a feeding tube except "nutritional problems"? He doesn't look malnourished in the pics. But maybe I'm missing something? 23 hospitalizations? In five years..that's 4-5 per year at least.

And this piece:
The little blond boy beams in dozens of photos on Lacey Spears' MySpace page: in the bath, at the park, sitting on the counter with a bright red pacifier in his mouth.

The photos are titled "My World My Everything" and "He Completes Me." In one, titled "A Mother's Love Is Unexplainable," she kisses the boy.

When people told her how cute he was, and asked if he was her child, Lacey said yes.

There's just one problem with this maternal picture: It isn't true.

The toddler in the photos is Jonathon Strain, the boy Lacey Spears called "JonJon," whom she watched for nearly two years before Garnett was born in December 2008.

Many, many red flags.. JMO

Kid has on an amber necklace, drinking from a Kleen Kanteen sippy, has a cloth diaper on in two photos. I wonder what "crunchy" mama/parenting boards she frequented that could have also made donations to her?

"Garnett Spears had a feeding tube for reasons that remain unclear. In Munchausen by proxy cases, the child frequently has a feeding tube or a central intravenous line that allows internal access to the body. "That's an avenue for medical chaos," Feldman said. "A feeding tube is a real red flag.""

NEXT, PART FIVE: "Garnett the Great journeyed on"

About the series

Police are investigating the death of 5-year-old Garnett Spears of Chestnut Ridge, who died in January at Westchester Medical Center with extremely high levels of salt in his body, sources told The Journal News. Police executed a search warrant at the apartment of his mother, Lacey Spears, in mid-January. They took food, her cellphone and computer. They also have questioned Lacey Spears' friends and family and sought Garnett's past medical records. Spears, who has hired an attorney, has not been charged and has denied doing anything to harm her son.

Read our five-day series, "Losing Garnett the Great," a Journal News report that follows the life of Lacey Spears from Alabama to Florida to Rockland's Fellowship Community where her well-documented devotion to Garnett ends in his unexplained death. We explore how a woman whose existence centered on her only child became the focus of a police probe into whether her son was poisoned. To see past stories in the series, go to http://lohud.com.

Part Five:
"Garnett the Great Journeyed On" is due out tomorrow

ETA: corrected the broken link from Part One (it worked the 1st time, but now it's not working - my apologies)

What a tragedy! I have dealt with MBP cases in the past, but none of them has died.

I found that she had three accounts on mothering type forums, but no posts. I found another account under a similar name she used on a parents of children with diabetes website, and while there are references to her son that fit the general age, there's no way to prove that it was actually her.

NG is featuring the case now. I'll post the transcript tomorrow.

Thanks so much for posting this. It has a wealth of information on her (very strange) behavior. RIP little man. The truth will come to light.

Wow, I have to give some major kudos for the reporting in this case! Interesting some of the general public response ... people thinking it's too much or unfairly targeting the mom. I wish all the poor little victims out there got this kind of coverage!

Follow the links on those stories to the live chat the reporters did tonight. Interesting stuff, and sounds like they are going to continue the coverage!

MBP is fascinating. In this case, at least, the irony of a devoted, doting mother who kills her son. I wonder if she did accidentally? Or was it the ultimate attention grabber??

I'd love to hear you share more about your experiences with MBP if you are willing to share!

Most do so accidentally when they "go too far." They want to keep the child slice do they can use him or her some more.
