I'm not sure if this will help at all, as I'm sure that most of Iqaluit knows Ben, but he is missing.

Benjamin (Ben) Palluq is someone who frequents high traffic areas of Iqaluit, such as the post office, hotels, airport, and Northmart. While many may see him as someone who panhandles, he is not aggressive and comes across as a pretty kind and vulnerable person. I would imagine that he is classified as an at-risk missing person.

I last saw him at the airport in Iqaluit in mid-February during a layover, and he was dressed relatively well, and I was assuming that he was flying somewhere, perhaps (and this is an assumption) for medical. I have encountered him many times at the airport, the hotel I stay for work, and at the Northmart.

The last time I spoke with him he told me that he wasn't working and was staying with some friends. My assumption is that he is what we would call effectively homeless in Nunavut, as it is pretty much impossible to live in the rough, so people usually find a place to sleep at night, as the community knows that nobody can live without shelter.

From what I've heard, there are some feet on the ground looking for Ben, and the RCMP wants to ensure his safety, but on the off-chance that there is someone who has seen him or perhaps is housing him, I thought I'd put this out there.

Here are some links regarding Ben, who should pose no threat to anyone attempting to contact him, IMO:

I have never known anyone to suggest he is confrontational or violent. It is possible that he has taken a flight to another community in Nunavut, or perhaps even Ottawa. Either way, please contact your local RCMP if you have seen him, and on a personal note (IMO), while waiting for the RCMP to respond, please offer him food or water if you are so obliged.

I wanted to add -- if you have any information on Ben, the phone number for the RCMP detachment in Iqaluit is 867-979-0123. I trust that you can call them collect if you have any information.

Should you be in any other Nunavut community (and perhaps a visitor, unaware of this), you can call the local detachment at the local code, with 0123 for the final 4 digits.

Posting this older article as I believe Ben is the missing man mentioned in the Jan '15 post.

Iqaluit residents rallied last week to help search for a missing homeless man, and for some people, it was a shock to see how some of the city’s less fortunate residents are getting by.

A city-wide search for Benjamin Palluq sparked concern among some city councillors, who suggested March 27 that the city does little to help homeless Iqalummiut who suffer from poor health. The RCMP, in collaboration with Nunavut Search and Rescue, the City of Iqaluit and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association led a community-wide effort to find Palluq, who was homeless. The 44-year-old homeless Iqaluit man had been missing since the first week of March.

Cox says he's been asking for the city to provide land for a new men's shelter with independent living units.
When a homeless man went missing last year, a man who had been living in a shack on the beach for the last two decades, told CBC News he didn't want to live in the current shelter.
"I don't want to be influenced by anyone," JT said.

I was hopeful the past tense "had been missing" in the year end review post meant he was no longer missing but I cannot find anything else to support that so I think it is simply a typo.
Ben went missing one year ago this month.

Dedicated learners

Benjamin Palluq has been dropping into the centre all year. And despite having to work, he was presented with an award last week for a 91 per cent attendance record. Jutanie Ishulutak was also awarded a certificate for achieving a 96 per cent attendance record over a nine-month period, as well as working fulltime.

"I don't want to sit home," Palluq said as he typed away on one of the new computers donated to the centre. "I'd rather be doing something. I want to continue."

Palluq is still eager to learn even though the centre was winding down last week, preparing to close its doors for the summer.

I simply cannot fathom that there could be homeless people in Iqaluit. Surely every person needs suitable shelter in such an inhospitable climate. I'm sad for Ben.

I'm on a work trip in Iqaluit right now, and nobody has heard anything. Very sad. He's missed.

The snow would have come and gone from Iqaluit since Ben disappeared, and it is not a huge community (approx. 7000), so how could he so totally disappear, or have succumbed to medical distress or misadventure without being found.

I do hope he's had an opportunity to simply relocate (wrt the reference to possibly Ottawa). There is a possible relative (JP from Ottawa) who was in Iqaluit in October 2011 enroute to his father's funeral in Igloolik, NU. If JP returned to Ottawa, it is possible Ben is a relative and may have tried to hook up with JP there.

Locatefamily has a list of the surname in Canada (22 in Canada with only 4 being in the Ottawa area including Orleans and Vanier):

canada411 has only 9 listings in Canada, all of them in Nunavut
