The husband of one of two women stabbed to death in a Victorian hair salon has emerged as the prime suspect, 23 years on.

Claire Acocks and Margaret Penny were killed at a Portland hairdressers in 1991, about 350km west of Melbourne, in a crime that rocked the rural town of 9000 people.

Both women's husbands were ruled out as suspects early on.

But now Margaret Penny's husband, Robert, has emerged as a key suspect, the Nine Network's 60 Minutes program reported on Sunday.

I searched but could not find a thread for this.

Portland, Vic is my hometown, I was 4 when this happened, I still remember my mum collecting me from kindergarten, and all the sirens and panic of the town.

After watching the story about this case last night on 60 minutes I was hoping there would be a thread on here.
Im looking forward to reading the book Horrible Man-Sinister Secrets and Truths Untold : The Portland Hair Salon Murders

Thanks Taco. :seeya:

I'm looking forward to it as well.

Here is an older but more detailed article about the murders.

THE Old London Inn is one of the more distinguished buildings in the harbourside town of Portland, 350 kilometres south-west of Melbourne.
It was built in 1844 for Stephen Henty, a member of the family that pioneered this first European settlement in the state.
It sits above Portland harbour on the corner of two of the town's main shopping strips, Julia and Bentinck streets.
The Old London hasn't operated as an inn for a very long time. If it did reopen, it would be unlikely to draw much custom.
The inexplicable ghastliness of what happened within its stone walls 20 years ago this week would spook you out of your thirst.
On the afternoon of Friday, May 3, 1991, someone walked into the Old London - then a hairdressing salon - and used a knife and possibly a pair of scissors to slash the lives out of two grandmothers. The weapons have never been found.
There seemed no motive beyond possibly robbery for the killing of hairdresser Claire Acocks, 49, and client Margaret Penny, 58. The salon was ransacked, but only a miserable $100 was missing.
Two decades on, all the questions sparked by that day's events remain unanswered.

THE brother-in-law of a Geelong woman has emerged as the prime suspect of a high-profile double homicide which left two women, including his wife, dead in a Portland hair salon 23 years ago.

Claire Acocks and Margaret Penny were killed at a Portland hairdresser in 1991, about 288km west of Geelong, in a crime that rocked the rural town of 9000 people.

Ms Penny’s sister, Ann Bryden, lives in Geelong and said she would never forget the phone call telling her of the incident.

ANN Bryden was busy ferrying one of her teenage kids into town in 1991 when she got a phone call that still sticks in her mind.

“You better come back here quickly,’’ her sister, Linda, said, but wouldn’t elaborate.

“I went around to Mum’s place. She was living in Clonard St, and Linda and Mum and Mum’s friends were all crying,’’ Ann says.

“They said to me, ‘Margaret got killed’.’’

MAN CHARGED WITH 1991 PORTLAND MURDERS
11 MINUTES AGO APRIL 13, 2015 9:49AM

AN 83-year-old man has been charged with the cold case murders of two women in a Victorian hair salon in 1991.
MARGARET Penny and Claire Acocks were found murdered at the Old London Coiffure Hairdressers in Portland in May, 1991.
The East Malvern man has been charged with two counts of murder and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.

WOW! Excellence in Policing IMO.

I was just coming here to post this update, thank you Fuskier for doing so. Good news there's finally been an arrest.

I was coming to post too! I'm gal they seems to have found something to pin him!

*glad, not gal! Too late for me to edit.

From the link above:

"Mr Penny's trial would also not be held for at least 12 months, he had no prior convictions and his wife of 23 years was in court to support him."

He sure didn't waste any time getting remarried after hid wife's brutal murder, did he? And how'd he know about the comb? Interesting that came up in a conversation about a possible hitman.

I'm curious what people think of the partial DNA that didn't match him..

Wow, I wonder if he did it? I have just heard about this case for the first time. Off to do some reading.

Police revealed in court that the case against Mr Penny largely rested on three phone calls to family and a conversation with Mrs Acock’s husband the day after she was killed.

And in a covertly recorded chat in February last year, Mr Penny told his granddaughter a comb was used as the murder weapon, the court heard.

Detective Leading Senior Constable Tom Hogan told the Supreme Court that in the hours after the women were murdered, Mr Penny had disclosed unreleased details about the killings.

en-Constable Hogan said telephone calls by Mr Penny to his son in the UK and to his daughter in Melbourne in the hours after the women were killed were crucial.

He said Mr Penny had disclosed chilling detail to Mrs Acock’s husband the morning after they were killed.
