MAGNITUDE-8.0 QUAKE STRIKES NORTHERN CHILE

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- A powerful magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck in off Chile's northern coast Tuesday night, and authorities ordered an evacuation of coastal areas in case of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 61 miles (99 kilometers) northwest of the city of Iquique at 8:46 p.m., shaking a region that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks.

Chile's National Emergency Office tweeted Tuesday night that it was asking everyone to evacuate the South American nation's coast.

CNN Chile broadcast video of people in Antofagasta, a port city, walking through the streets as traffic piled up in some places. They appeared to be calm.

A tsunami warning was in effect for Chile, Peru and Ecuador.

A tsunami watch was issued for Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

So sad. What is going on with all these earthquakes lately. It seems like one a day.

I love the compassion in our members. God bless those affected.

The Chilean government have confirmed two deaths so far, while three other people are seriously injured.

From link above.

At least eight strong aftershocks followed in the few hours after the quake, including a 6.2 tremor. Seismologists have warned that more aftershocks and an even bigger quake cannot be discounted.

The interior minister also told Chilean TV that some 300 women inmates had escaped from a prison.

"We have asked citizens to evacuate the entire coast... there is no serious damage to houses... there have been no people hurt," said Chilean home office minister Mahmud Aleuy.
I find that last quote difficult to believe.

CHILEANS WORRY OVER STRING OF 300 QUAKES IN NORTH

The unnerving activity began with a strong magnitude-6.7 quake on March 16 that caused more than 100,000 people to briefly evacuate low-lying areas, although no tsunami materialized and there was little physical damage from the shaking.

But the land has not settled down. More than a dozen perceptible quakes were felt in the city of Iquique just on Monday.

SANTIAGO, Chile — A powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off northern Chile on Tuesday night, setting off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along the country's entire Pacific coast. Five people were crushed to death or suffered fatal heart attacks, the interior minister said, but Chile apparently escaped major damage or serious casualties.

The shaking loosed landslides that blocked roads, power failed for thousands, an airport was damaged and several businesses caught fire. About 300 inmates escaped from a women's prison in the city of Iquique, and Chile's military was sending a planeload of special forces to help police guard against looting.

Expert: Chile's M8.2 quake not 'the big one'

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - Authorities lifted tsunami warnings for Chile's long coastline early Wednesday after a magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck the South American nation north. Six people were crushed to death or suffered fatal heart attacks, a remarkably low toll for such a powerful shift in the Earth's crust.
