Breaking news

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

The airline said in a statement that flight MH370 disappeared at 02:40 local time on Saturday (18:40 GMT on Friday).

I'm praying the plane is found and people on the plane survive.

The moderators have been wading in a pool of alerts this morning - and most are coming from this forum. :yow: I wanted to review some of the issues that happened yesterday because if the issues continue, some of our members are going to find themselves on the outside looking in. :(

- Discuss the topic and not each other. If you have a problem with a fellow poster, alert via the little red triangle in the upper corner of the post and the mods will review privately

- Limit the one liners. A little humor while waiting is okay, but when it goes on and on then it falls into being "off topic" which is a forum violation. And make sure you're not poking fun at this tragedy. Not funny.

- The political comments need to go in the Political Pavilion. Also, while it's a good thing to be proud of your own country, it's not good to make fun of other countries. Ah, of course - I'm a bit foggy today

It's a really easy mistake to make though. But lots of people overseas don't realise just how far away from Perth the search area is. I think the first search area was about the same as the distance between New York and Houston or from London to Moscow.

It was likely around dawn when the plane crashed, depending on its position.

but yeah I should definitely know these things

Anish Patel, president of US black box beacon manufacturer Dukane Seacom, said he was "highly sceptical" about the report.

"Let's get some additional assets in the water so we can corroborate, before we get everyone's hopes up," he told CNN.

I am very doubtful as well that they have found the black box. We can't even find a floating cushion (and there at least about 300 of them, but they found the black box?

Highly unlikely.

I just hope the weather there cooperates for the next 2 or 3 days at least.

Is anyone following Finding Philip Wood FB page?

She says she does not believe Malaysia did not follow the plane. Said they have very advanced radar.

I've been wondering about this. Having the technical capacity to track the plane and having someone watching and interpreting that information are two very different things. If you think about the volume of air traffic that is typically in the air, if air traffic control doesn't keep on top of it then I doubt any other agency is going to be keeping track of every commercial flight at any given time.

That is a good point, but also the debris could have gone to a different location by now with the currents and everything.

And instead of trying to figure out and calculate where the debris would be by now (if crash was at that location), and then go out and send planes and ships to search there - much easier to just verify this "acoustic event" as related to the black box or not, first.

Regarding Diego Garcia, I doubt it's of any particular significance but, just for some historical background from a British perspective, the historic inhabitants were evicted by the UK government in the 1960s, to make way for the base, and have asserted their right to return ever since, in fact they won a high court case in 2006, in London:

The US lease expires in 2016 and must be renegotiated by the end of this year:

The ocean seems to be more than we can comprehend or have any that recall. My father did recall. He was navy, in subs.

The ocean is incredibly deeper than we can comprehend, incredibly violent ocean. All that have water jobs know.

When you go to the beach and see waves larger than a house, you can double or triple that for the Indian Ocean. Close to tsumani at all times, a planetary vortex. Keep in mind that right now it is freezing cold too.

How much experience can anyone have with what a ping would sound like at this depth, I wonder?

This is purely a guess, and I would welcome being corrected, but I think the detection instrument converts the frequency signal (emmitted by the black-box) into a "sound". Like your radio, for example (if you remember what that is), the radio signal is sitting waiting for you to turn on your radio. If you don't turn on your radio you won't hear the broadcast waves. I would be very annoyed if everytime I flew I had to be hearing the damn black-box pinging for the entire flight.
I suppose a tree falling in the forest, with nobody there to hear it, would be a non-acoustic event.

Thomas Altshuler, the vice president and general manager for Teledyne Marine Systems, said the device pictured in the photographs is a DPL-275 diver pinger locator and is intended for use in relatively shallow water. He said it is mainly intended for use by a diver, though it can also be used mounted to a pole or a boom and held over the side of a boat, the method apparently used by the crew of the Haixun 01.

But he was very cautious about whether the device could be used to successfully detect a pinger that was thousands of feet below the surface.

I posted a link last night about the ship .

Here is is again.
http://http://en.kunming.cn/index/content/2012-07/30/content_3033359.htm
The new flagship is the first patrol vessel capable of completing both maritime surveillance and rescue missions, according to a statement from the Shanghai Maritime Bureau, which will manage the ship.
The vessel is responsible for cruising on China's territorial waters, searching and saving lives at sea, investigating maritime disputes, monitoring oil spills and conducting emergency disposals, the statement said, adding the vessel can also tow ships and put out fires on other boats

I do not doubt for a minute that China has equipment needed to detect the black box .If there were to stumble upon it.

China reported images from satellite images, so IMO I believe they are following up on those images ,which is why they are not in the same area as the others. I think they are conducting themselves in a way that keeps in line with their political climate and how their population would expect them too.

I've just been thinking about how they are determining the search area.

I think the general consensus is that the plane was on auto-pilot after the South turn. Because it could not have done a lot of variance in speed/altitude on the way after South turn, or it would have used up more fuel and not been able to make it to the 8:11 arc point.

I wonder if any of the pilots on here can tell us more about auto-pilot, and if they know, specifically about auto-pilot on 777. For example, I would think there would be some general speeds - like 400 knots, 450 knots, 500 knots, 550, etc.. Meaning, the speeds are set at some round, estimate number intervals - like you can change the speed in 25's, 50's, 75's, 100's, etc.. I know I am not writing it very clearly, but hopefully someone can understand what I'm trying to say.

So, for example, they know the plane had to be at an arc point at 8:11. They can (hopefully) estimate the fuel there was in the plane starting at the South turn. What they need is the speed and altitude the plane was flying at on its path.

If the plane was on auto-pilot, the speed and altitude would have been constant from the South turn.

They can come up with a minimum and max speed and min and max altitude to ensure plane was on arc at 8:11.

What they need is to find out exact speed and altitude inbetween those min and max.

But if the speed and altitudes are set at rounded numbers, it should be easier to try to narrow that range, right?

Because let's say the speed could have been 400,425, 450, 475, etc.. But not 410, 433, 460, 495, etc..

And also, why would the pilot choose some number like speed of 460? Instead of just 450?

Altitude would be much harder, I think.

BBM

Yes, that would be nerve racking. The ping is activated by impact or immersion.
