    CO - Damian, 51, & Evan McManus, 18, Mount Evans, 2 April 2014

Damian McManus, and his son Evan McManus

St. Louis Park Father, Son Missing In Colorado -

Damian McManus, 51, and his son Evan, 18, took an impromptu trip to the mountains in Colorado after Evan’s mother and twin sister went on a trip to Mexico, according to the spokesperson. Both the girl and Evan are seniors at St. Louis Park High School. Barwick says the two men left for a camping trip on Wednesday and were due back on Sunday. They had driven to Colorado from Minnesota and planned to stop and hike along the way as part of their father-son trip for spring break.
Authorities in Colorado said an alpine rescue team was paged at about 3 p.m. Sunday on a report of two missing and overdue hikers. Authorities have been searching for them in an area of Echo Lake on the north shoulder of Mount Evans, which has an elevation of more than 10,000 feet. Efforts to contact the two men have been unsuccessful because of poor cell phone reception in the area.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. - 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)

Just before the pair began to hike across the mountain, Evan texted his girlfriend, AR, promising to message her again when they had completed the trek.
She did not hear from him again.

father and son are unaccounted for “in what you would call arctic conditions,” specifically temperatures well below zero, with 5 feet of snow on the ground and strong winds.

“Given that they said they were going on a hike, this suggests they were not adequately prepared for [staying] overnight,” he added. “It is mountainous, there are no houses and one road is covered in snow and is closed.”
there were a lot of people engaged in outdoor activities in the area Sunday “and no one bumped into them. We haven’t found any tracks of there’s. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.”

Staff at the hotel where the father and son stayed knew something was amiss on Thursday because the pair hadn’t checked out. “And the maid said no one had been back in the room,” Bouzrara said. But authorities told the hotel staff that only a family member can file a missing persons report, Bouzrara said.

Katherine McManus got an e-mail from her husband last Tuesday, Bouzrara said. But McManus wasn’t alarmed that she hadn’t heard from her husband or son since then, figuring cellphone coverage in Mexico and in Colorado mountains was spotty, Bouzrara said. It wasn’t until Sunday, when headed to the airport in Mexico, that Katherine McManus found out that her husband and son hadn’t been heard from for days and hadn’t returned to the Twin Cities on Saturday as expected.

Back in Minnesota, Katherine McManus called authorities in Colorado and the search began.

So if someone doesn't have a family member to report them missing, the authorities would never start looking for them? What a shame because several days were lost. I would think, in a recreational area, that authorities know that people could get lost.

I'm a local and just wow... I don't know them personally, but I was at elementary school with Evan (I'm several years ahead), we have several mutual friends and we lived in the same neighborhood. The whole community is pretty amped up; we're all feeling pretty helpless. There's not a lot any of us can do from MN but we're hopeful and amazed by the number of search groups in Colorado that are looking for them. Our high school students are pretty shook up; just last year a student died of complications from the flu.

"Tuesday’s assignment was for searchers to concentrate on a paved road that leads to the top of 12,000-foot Mount Goliath, said Bill Barwick, of the nonprofit Alpine Rescue Team, whose trained mountaineers respond to wilderness emergencies."

Hoping for good news, because anything is possible, but I can't think of a worse place to go missing.

"Bouzrara said Damian McManus has survival and orienteering skills from his military background in England."

Even though the weather conditions have been bad, perhaps the survival training he had would have helped them, and is helping them to survive.
