Details of Disappearance
Jenkins was last seen in Sumter, South Carolina on August 29, 2013. At 6:00 a.m., she walked with her ten-year-old son from their residence in the 500 block of south Sumter Street, across a vacant lot to the elementary school bus stop. She put him on the bus. After the bus left, she stayed in the street for a moment, appearing confused, before walking back in the direction of home. She never arrived there and has never been heard from again.

In the year prior to her disappearance, Jenkins had had some personal problems: she lost her job and then her apartment and had to take her son and move in with her mother, and then her truck got repossessed. According to her family, she appeared withdrawn and distant prior to her disappearance and spent hours walking around the neighborhood alone. The night before she went missing, she came home at 8:30 p.m., later than usual, and her lip looked swollen, but she wouldn't say what had happened. She told her mother to make sure her son got to school if she wasn't there in the morning.

There were reported sightings of Jenkins in the local area for a few weeks after her disappearance, but none of them have been confirmed, and there hasn't been any activity on her bank account. She may frequent the Oakland, Council and Dingle street areas. Due to her behavior prior to her disappearance, she is believed to be in danger. Her case remains unsolved.

Is it this Barbara I wonder??

It’s certainly possible - it seems unlikely for her to have survived 7 years, ending up in a town 2 hours away, still in possession of a cell phone, with no communication with her family.

I wish the article provided more information like any age estimate or height. Basically the points of overlap are the first name (a common enough one), race, state, and possibly some overlap in mental state. Pretty circumstantial.

SUMTER, SC (WACH) — A Sumter woman vanished after walking her 10-year-old son to the bus stop, leaving her family and friends devastated and searching for answers.

Today her family celebrated her 53rd birthday but they tell us it won't feel like a real celebration until she’s back home.

Sumter officials say Barbara Jenkins was last seen almost nine years ago on August 29th in 2013 wearing a black shirt and black jeans.

The memorial site ended up taking nearly two years to complete. The group went from council to council, asking for a piece of property. It wasn’t until April 2021 that Sumter County Council approved a site at 115 N. Harvin St., the location of a former Holocaust memorial that has since moved to a new home.

Fundraisers were held to purchase the light, benches and construction, and it wasn’t until Feb. 17 of this year that the concrete was poured. By the end of the summer, the benches and light were installed.

Several families of missing people from Sumter attended and spoke at the unveiling. Those included family members and friends of Garcia, Willie Hodge Jr., Barbara Nave, Tommy Brailey, Barbara Jenkins, Julia Bean, Naomi Collins, Stacy Lester and Shelton Sanders.

On August 29, 2013– 44-YEAR-OLD Barbara Ann Jenkins was on her way back home from dropping her son at the bus stop when she was last seen. Sumter Police took on the case – but with no leads – it has since been closed. Rashad Hilton moved to the Savannah area not too long ago and says he feels Savannah PD has the resources to solve his mother’s case or at the very least, get the appropriate agencies involved.

“You know more manpower, more resources again all we want is closure. You know, whatever the closure is, we just our family, me personally I deserve this closure so, again whatever they can do would be a blessing, would be a help, but then again if they can’t do anything I understand”.
