Police: Drunk Woman Calls 911 For Ride Home From Bar

April 8, 2014 10:40 AM

TROY (WWJ) - A 24-year-old Sterling Heights woman is facing misdemeanor charges after she called 911 for a ride home from a bar because she was too drunk to drive.

Troy Police Sgt. Andy Breidenich said Alana Sims was arrested early Friday morning after a night of drinking at Joe Kool’s Bar and Grill on Big Beaver Road, near John R Road.

“She called our 911 line and our call takers mentioned that it was an emergency line and she basically asked for an escort home,” Breidenich told WWJ’s Sandra McNeill.

WWJ Newsradio 950 obtained audio of the 911 call, in which Sims says “I need an escort to home,” before hanging up on the operator...

It's better than drunk driving....... though why not call a cab? I thought most bars had numbers for cabs.

She's young and tried to be responsible while under in influence. I refuse to fault her and I believe a stern talking to would have sufficed.

‘It appears she didn’t exhaust any avenues other than calling one or two cab services who did not have anyone readily available to pick her up and therefore she used the 911 line to ask for a ride home.”

So she at least tried to call a cab. Although I do agree 911 should be only used for emergencies she also was trying to do the right thing. I feel like they are taking it to far by charging her.

I had a next door neighbor that called 911 ALL THE TIME. Once she asked for the firefighters and when they arrived she told them she called them because she wanted to take a nap! She was going through a divorce, and was tired of taking care of her kids. She claimed to be really exhausted! I kid you not! (She got a little crazy.)

Another 911 story.....

A few years ago our home owners association sent out a monthly statement which included a rule about no ball playing in the common areas. (too easy to damage cars or buildings).

The statment specifically requested residents call 911 if they see anyone playing ball on the association property. I was so mad to see that, I thought it was such a waste of resources. I complained to the property manager and asked if she had permission from the town to utilize their emergency services to report ball playing.

I suggested she use the non-emergency number if she was going to suggest any number. She did compromise and on the next statement reworded it to mean contact local authorities...... so the homeowner could decide on which number was most appropriate.

I haven't ever been to Joe Kool's but know where it is and that it's a popular sports bar. It's a few doors down from the Hockeytown Store in a large shopping complex. It's not the type of place that DH and/or I would frequent, but the food is supposed to be decent with lots of local brews on tap.

If the young woman was inebriated to the point that she didn't want to drive home, why is there no mention of Troy Police citing the restaurant/bar for serving her too much alcohol? Seems to me that they are responsible for this young woman being too drunk to drive. :moo:
