Woman missing as fire sweeps through trailer in Chester -

    CHESTER, Maine —
An elderly woman is missing and feared dead in a fire that swept through the trailer she shares with her grandson on Loop Road on Thursday, officials said.
Shirley Day, 68, had just received her daily medications from Jason Ryder when Ryder left to go down the road to get the newspaper. In the seven minutes in which Ryder ran the errand, fire erupted in the trailer. When Ryder returned to the trailer, he told firefighters that he found the smoke and heat too intense to get back into the building.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

    RIP Shirley.

Call me cynical but this story makes me angry and suspicious. Maybe I am just projecting my own concerns over my gram becoming a victim due to her Alzheimer's. The elderly are at such a disadvantage, just like children. They have to trust their caregivers and some caregivers just aren't trustworthy. Hopefully this was just an accident and coincidental but my gut is churning when I read this story.
