Is a cyclone a hurricane or a tornado? I'm confused.

I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.

A tornado occurs over land. Cyclones & hurricanes occur over water.

In northern hemisphere the storms are referred to as hurricanes or typhoons.
    Southern hemisphere they're cyclones.

The only difference between the two is...if they are north of the equator they rotate clockwise. If they are south, they rotate counterclockwise

The category four cyclone made landfall around 9pm with winds of up to 230 kilometres an hour at its core.

Gales stretched 185 kilometres from the centre ....

Residents have been warned that properties built before 1985 may not withstand the powerful winds.

"It's like the wind is roaring."

The power has been cut ......

"The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level which will be significantly above the normal tide, with damaging waves, strong currents and flooding of low-lying areas extending some way inland," the bureau says.

I think some of them up there have dodged a massive bullet when it was downgraded to a Cat 4 just prior to landfall. Earlier tonight it was predicted to increase from the Cat 5 it had been for quite some time.

Still an absolute monster & the damage will be massive!! Hopefully no lives will be lost.

12.10am: Severe tropical cyclone Ita weakened slightly after crossing the far north Queensland coast but still has very destructive winds with gusts up to 205km/h near its centre.

Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecaster Andrew Busalino said high winds and heavy rain were still expected after the cyclone crossed the coast near Cape Flattery at about 9pm (AEST), with winds up to 230km/h.
