The north takes shelter for longest night

April 11, 2014 8:35PM

ROLLING COVERAGE: It's too late to run now. With high winds being felt in parts of the far north, residents have taken shelter against the looming onslaught of Cyclone Ita

THE Bureau of Meterology has revised Cyclone Ita’s path as residents in the state’s far north bunker down for a long night of extreme weather. Refresh this page for regular updates.

8.30pm: Wind gusts are now reaching 154km/h at Cape Flattery as Cyclone Ita bears down on the Queensland coast.

The Category 4 system is estimated to be 80km north northeast of Cooktown and 240 km north of Cairns, moving at around 11km/h.

This monster cyclone will be crossing the coast within next couple of hours.

My thoughts & prayers are with everyone in north Queensland tonight.

Take care & stay safe!!

Stay safe up there anyone who is in Ita's path.

A tornado occurs over land. Cyclones & hurricanes occur over water.

In northern hemisphere the storms are referred to as hurricanes or typhoons.
Southern hemisphere they're cyclones.

The only difference between the two is...if they are north of the equator they rotate clockwise. If they are south, they rotate counterclockwise

The category four cyclone made landfall around 9pm with winds of up to 230 kilometres an hour at its core.

Gales stretched 185 kilometres from the centre ....

Residents have been warned that properties built before 1985 may not withstand the powerful winds.

"It's like the wind is roaring."

The power has been cut ......

"The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level which will be significantly above the normal tide, with damaging waves, strong currents and flooding of low-lying areas extending some way inland," the bureau says.

I think some of them up there have dodged a massive bullet when it was downgraded to a Cat 4 just prior to landfall. Earlier tonight it was predicted to increase from the Cat 5 it had been for quite some time.

Still an absolute monster & the damage will be massive!! Hopefully no lives will be lost.

12.10am: Severe tropical cyclone Ita weakened slightly after crossing the far north Queensland coast but still has very destructive winds with gusts up to 205km/h near its centre.

Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecaster Andrew Busalino said high winds and heavy rain were still expected after the cyclone crossed the coast near Cape Flattery at about 9pm (AEST), with winds up to 230km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Ita has torn roofs from houses and pubs, uprooted trees and left thousands without power.

Ita, which crossed the coast as a category 4 storm about 10pm near Cape Flattery, was a category 1 cyclone by Saturday afternoon.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Ken Kato said Ita would likely to be downgraded to a tropical low late Saturday.

As of 3pm, Ita had moved south to within 85 kilometres of Cairns, which was experiencing heavy rain and howling wind.

QUEENSLANDERS from Cooktown to Proserpine will be swamped by floodwaters and torrential downpours as Cyclone Ita continues to menace the state’s north.

Several towns were cut off by floodwaters as the former Category 5 system dumped hundreds of millimetres of rain in its track towards the Whitsundays.

Cyclone Ita crossed the coast at Cape Flattery late Friday night, packing 230km/h winds. It damaged dozens of houses and a historic hotel in Cooktown.

But the feared super-storm did not eventuate as Ita had lost much of its intensity before it reached Cooktown.

It still works here Tulessa although the cyclone is long past the area where that cam is located. Not much to see on it anyway as it's dark...10.32pm Sunday.
