TX - Nicolas Fields, 7 wks, dies in MVA, Harris County, 31 May 2005

Deputies says an estranged dad's attempt to kidnap his 1-year-old toddler ended with the child's death when the man smashed his car into a construction barrier. The man's 4-year-old stepchild was seriously injured as well.

Just when I think that I have seen the most depraved things a human can do to another human, somebody posts a new story...........

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

The father arrived at his in-laws' house in the 13700 block of Darjean and started creating a disturbance with his estranged wife while the children still slept. When she stepped outside to speak to him privately, he forced her into his car and sped down the road. She managed to jump out at a McDonald's and telephone for help, but in the meantime, he returned to the house, forced the children into his car and took off again.

While speeding down Homestead Road toward Old Humble Road, he hit the construction barrier.

The youngest child, who was lying on the front seat without any seat belt or car seat, was killed when the air bag deployed, Denholm said. The 4-year-old was flown to Hermann Memorial Hospital with serious injuries but is expected to live, he said.

This is a little confusing . . . was he married to both women at once and estrange from just one? It seems strange that the mother of the child that died had her husband's step-child staying over there sleeping.

What an azzzzzhole! Why do the innocent have to die while the morally challenged continue to live?

Those poor babies and that poor mother. I hate hearing about stuff like this. So preventable.

It IS written in a confusing way, but the way I interpret it is that BOTH of the children belonged to the mother, but only the youngest is the child of the kidnapper/murderer.

That poor baby. What a tragedy.

What the .... while all the other LE is out looking for him she takes him to the hospital to see the injuried son? Did they also stop by the morgue to see the dead child? She's an azzzzhole as well.

I am not belittling this story, but this reporter needs to go back to school to learn how to write an article that makes sense.

"Fields then drove back to the same residence, where he is accused of taking his infant son and kidnapping his Luebano's 4-year-old child by another man, sheriff's detectives said."

I think if you just take out "his" it makes sense.. right??

I've sort of puzzled it out, but I'm puzzled why an off-duty officer would risk her job to take a step-father that is wanted for murder to visit his step-son who he almost killed.
