Police are appealing for public assistance following a suspected hit and run near Port Kembla overnight.

Just after 1am (Sunday 20 April 2014), emergency services were called to Northcliffe Drive, near the intersection of Lake Heights Road, at Lake Heights, after reports of a woman on the road.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Local Area Command arrived to find a 17-year-old girl lying on the roadway.

The girl was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics for head injuries, before being taken to Wollongong Hospital.

She remains in hospital in a critical condition with extensive head injuries.

Police spoke to a number of witnesses in the neighbourhood, who described hearing a loud noise shortly before discovering the girl on the roadway.

Specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit also attended and examined the scene.

Police are investigating the possibility that the girl was struck by a vehicle and the driver left the location.

Inquiries into the matter are continuing and police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, and has not yet spoken to detectives, to come forward.

Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/.

I'll have nightmares thinking about a 17 year walking 5 klms at 1am. that's such a long way for a young girl at that time of night.
Could she have been thrown from a car?
Just horrible for her parents.

‘‘Last night my younger sister... was walking home alone from Warrawong to Berkeley,’’ she wrote.

As I posted in the other thread, my friend's neighbour found this young lady and told my friend about her injuries and told her that it didn't look like they were from being hit. He saw her arm reaching out as he drive past, but apparently she was unconscious when he went to her. I also saw a post made by April last night which sounded frightening :( This is about 10 mins from my house and it's very unusual to hear of anything like this.

I will say that I would not recommend walking there in the middle of the night though. There are some great paths next to the lake that I was planning on running soon, but might hold off for the moment, just in case.

Sad:( I hope she makes a full recovery and they find who did it. Coward!

RULES ON POSTING FACEBOOK INFORMATION:

Social Networks

Regarding Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other social networking or blog websites: Links may be used to direct posters to view something on a social networking page. But postings on social networking sites are not considered fact; they are rumor. Copying and pasting, or taking screen caps, directly from these pages is not allowed. Paraphrasing is okay. (Exception: If the Twitter or Facebook post belongs to a verified news station, it may be copied. But a link should still be provided.)

Also, social networking pages may only be linked if they are directly related to a case, i.e. the victim or suspect. We don't want to post to someone's mother, brother, employer, milkman, or postal carrier just because they know the main player. We also NEVER link to minor's pages (unless they are the victim). And be sure that the page actually belongs to the person being discussed. Do not link to someone if you are not 100% sure it is the correct person. And if a social networking is set to private and you get in the back way, you may not post what you find. Private means private!

Lake Heights hit and run: April-Lee Gillen found injured beside the road

The sister of a teenage girl left fighting for her life after a suspected hit and run near Port Kembla on Sunday morning has taken to social media to plead for information.

Witnesses found April-Lee Gillen, 17, lying by the side of the road on Northcliffe Drive at Lake Heights shortly after 1am on Sunday.

I agree with They'll get you
It is a long way for a girl to be walking home alone at night.
This is looking very sinister, and yes maybe not a hit a run as first thought?

Doesn't sound like she had any intention of getting in the car, this weirdo may have lost it and decided to hit her with his car instead.

Police said a number of witnesses described hearing a noise shortly before discovering the girl on the roadway

Ok, my bad. I'll go back to the corner. Sorry.
Please excuse my misunderstanding if its wrong, but going by lambchops post, does it mean you can paraphrase what you read? I'm a bit confused...

Ok, I just reread what you said, and as it was a post by her sister, then I guess not.

What a beautiful young woman! This is son tragic. if this was a hit and run,was the driver someone she knew?

Channel 7 tonight said April Lee Gillen posted a message on her social media page just before she was found. Like this-
some Asian guy told me to get into his car, I'm in trouble, SOS.

Sorry I can't find the link from TV news but I heard it.
