FAMILY’S ANGUISH: Death of our pure girl is so unfair

April 22, 2014 12:00AM

THE family and friends of a north Queensland woman murdered at the weekend have remembered her as a “beautiful’’, “pure’’ person.

Jo La Spina, 26, was found about 5pm on Saturday at Bingil Bay, near Tully, outside a home where she had planned to stay the night.

Police were yesterday speaking to a man in relation to the matter after launching a murder investigation in the tourist town, 130km south of Cairns.

OMG what is with all the senseless violence against women in Australia lately? I know it happens everywhere every day but I feel like every other thread here now has that in common.

May justice be swift!

STAFF at a prominent Far Northern tour operator are mourning the death of a popular staff member who was found dead in a Bingil Bay townhouse at the weekend.

Jo La Spina, 26, was found about 5pm on Saturday by the occupant of the Bingil Bay Rd home where she had planned to stay the night.

Police were yesterday speaking to a man in relation to the matter after launching a homicide investigation in the quiet tourist town, 130km south of Cairns.

Ms La Spina, of nearby Feluga, worked as a photographer for white water rafting company Raging Thunder in Tully, where she had been employed for the past 2½ years.

Police were yesterday tight-lipped about the circumstances of Ms La Spina’s death, but confirmed a person was assisting with their investigation.

Regional Crime Co-ordinator Detective Acting Superintendent Bruno Asnicar said the investigation was progressing well.

“We are looking at somebody but at this stage we just can’t say any more,” Acting Supt Asnicar said.

This early article says ..

Police were speaking to witnesses and had identified a number of people they believed could help with the investigation, he said.

A Bingil Bay shop owner, who asked not to be named, said the woman’s death had shocked the residents of the normally quiet tourist town.

I wonder if there were a few people at the residence when Jo's murder occurred. And I wonder if they were tourists that Jo had met while at work at Raging Thunder.

Also from marlywings article:

One neighbour reportedly told of hearing sounds like a woman crying out for help, but did not intervene.

Seriously, I can understand being scared and not wanting to confront someone but at least call the police! :(

With many people at home on a Saturday, you would think that a few people may have heard a commotion coming from the town house. And reportedly, as well as Jo, several other people were left sleeping there when the workmates went to work .. although they may have left before the attack.

This seems to be the property where Jo was found ... less overgrown than recent photos, but the landmarks are all the same. There are more than a few residences there.

There may be several people that will spend the rest of their lives wishing they had made a phone call to police, went and banged on a door, yelled out to the people in the apartment ... did anything to let the perp know they were being witnessed, by sight or by sound. It just may have stopped the assault. :(

But now, like Lisa Harnum's case, I hope they testify and help put the dangerous perp behind bars.

DETECTIVES investigating the alleged murder of tourism worker Jo La Spina have released a man after holding him in custody for two days.

The 32-year-old was freed without charge on Monday night from the Cairns watch-house, where he had been detained on Sunday and questioned at length over Ms La Spina’s death.

DNA samples have been taken from the man and other people who were in the Bingil Bay townhouse where the 26-year-old woman’s body was found on Saturday afternoon.

“He is clearly a person of interest to our investigation,” Far Northern regional crime co-ordinator Detective Acting Inspector Kevin Goan said.

I certainly hope that means they are trying to zero in on one suspect only. :(

Police were keen to retrace her steps during the 24 hours before her death.

“We’re particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have had contact with her – in person, by phone, by text, Facebook or Twitter – in Feluga, Bingil Bay or the Mission Beach area,” he said.

Crime scene investigators remain at the townhouse and a forensic pathologist is in the process of officially determining Ms La Spina’s cause of death.

Acting Insp. Goan said the case remained a homicide investigation because of the nature of Ms La Spina’s injuries.

“Upon discovery, there were wounds that were concerning to first-response police and ambulance officers,” he said.

“The preliminary post-mortem investigation confirmed suspicions that Joanne’s death had been brought about by someone else.”

Police seek information on mystery man in hunt for clues over death of Jo La Spina at Bingil Bay

He called on anyone who spent time at the Bingil Bay Cafe throughout Good Friday who may have seen any type of interaction between Ms La Spina and a dark-skinned man to come forward.

“Anyone who has been at the Bingil Bay Cafe and may have seen a dark-skinned male attempting to escort the deceased from the dance floor,” he said.

“Anyone who may have witnessed any attempted act of intimacy by the dark-skinned male with the deceased.

This is a line of inquiry that needs to be investigated, so if people have seen this incident, or an incident of that nature, we would be very pleased to speak with them.”

The cafe was believed to have remained open into the early hours of Saturday morning and quite a large number of people were there.

In the Cairns Post article it is Quoted “The possibility of effecting an arrest is very high,”

I wonder if they've got some concrete evidence against the guy they held for 2 days.

There are a few things bothering me about the info released about this case ….

Articles about Jo have said how ‘pure’ she was. Did something happen that breached that 'purity'?

The police may well have DNA evidence, but do they need to prove that anything that may have happened was not consensual? And that is why they are seeking info about someone trying to lead Jo off the dance floor, and any type of interaction between Jo and this person?

If there were others present, why are they not speaking up? Are they protecting someone, or protecting their own involvement? If a neighbour heard a voice calling for help, surely they did to.

Why did the people living at the townhouse go to work and leave Jo alone with these people, if they are the people suspected of being involved in her murder, and if one of them was being persistent in trying to get Jo to ‘interact’ with him?

Sounds like someone is getting backed right into a corner.

He said the car was sporting NSW registration plates.

It is not currently missing, but police are just trying to pin down where it went and what it did throughout Saturday.

And .....

It was revealed yesterday that Ms La Spina’s death likely took place some time after daybreak on Saturday but police have since revised what they believe her movements were on Friday.

Police confirmed late yesterday the venue where Ms La Spina may have been dancing late on Friday night was not the Bingil Bay Cafe, but Jackaroo Hostel on Frizelle Rd.

You can listen to the police press conference from yesterday here.

https://soundcloud.com/queenslandpolice/supt-asnicar-presser-240414

It basically says .....

- Car is faded dark grey … interested in movements of vehicle … tell us where you saw it and what sort of activities the vehicle was conducting.
- Interested in movements of car on Saturday 19th, particularly in the morning from dawn onwards, in Bingle Bay, Mission Beach, Southern Mission Beach area.
- Did you see the vehicle with 10 people in it and a surfboard on top, did you see the vehicle with one person in it … police won't give further info as they need people with fresh eyes.
- Public have nothing to fear at all.
- Investigation is extremely intense at moment – very comfortable with the way things are progressing.
