Darlene Krashoc was an active duty soldier at Fort Carson. She was found murdered behind a restaurant on March 17, 1987. For some reason, her case does not have a big presence on the 'net, although there is some information out there.

Darlene was the sister of a friend. I know her family is still waiting for a resolution.

Here's the Colorado Bureau of Investigation listing:

https://www.colorado.gov/apps/coldcase/casedetail.html?id=357

I'm a little confused as to who is investigating Darlene's murder. The CBI mention above asks anybody with information to contact the Colorado Springs PD. However, the CSPD listing, below, says that the army is investigating:

https://www.springsgov.com/Page.aspx?NavID=3410

And there's more info in this article from the Gazette (Colorado Springs):

Although I haven't seen anything anywhere that indicates a suspect in Darlene's murder, I think a good hard look should be taken at Jeffery Newsome. He's a suspect in the murder of a woman in 1984 that occurred when he was serving at Fort Carson.

There isn't much out there about Newsome, but this blog post says that he killed someone by strangling her with a coat hanger, the same way Darlene was murdered. That seems like a really unusual MO to me.

It's troubling, though. In one article, it says that there's DNA from Darlene's murder and there have been no matches. They must have considered this guy.

Newsome certainly would seem to fit the means-motive-opportunity paradigm.

YEAH id say he's a pretty solid candidate, especially since it seems he basically strangled ALL his victims, with either wire or a coat hanger.

I believe most of his victims were acquaintances, as well

The last victim (the one which he was sentenced to life for ) was picked up in a club.. Darlene was discarded behind a club

I wonder however, if in the one article, where they said "In 1996, a killer who bit his victims was arrested on the East Coast and detectives sent plaster casts of the bite marks on Krashoc. It did not match.

was actually Newsome

In order though to investigate , you have to eliminate, ALOT of questions, and anyone close to her 1st.

was she seeing anyone
was she expecting anyone
where did she go the night she was murdered
do any of her peers know what she was afraid of
was she being stalked?
was she acquainted with Jeffery Newsome at all?
was she indebt to anyone

However when you have a guy, who later is identified as s serial killer, who just happened to be in the same area as the victim, during the times he was committing his crimes, and was killed in a manner odd in and of itself which just also happens to be consistent with the manner in which he killed his other victims.

I mean

If it walks like a duck
quacks like a duck
has webbed feet like a duck
It probably isn't a platypus

BBM.

Yeah that's my feeling. I wish there was more I could find out about Newsome. He's not in Murderpedia or any of the usual places. There's a book written by a profiler that mentions him -- but that's all it does. Mention him. Says he strangled girls with coat hangers. Maybe one of the sleuthers can find out more.

Too many coincidences, Id like to know if he was the one who's teeth impressions were tested .

Hes serving life now, in Alabama and Colorado is a death penalty state, to be honest what would most likely happen if it were to go to trial is a plea bargain to avoid the death penalty if he would admit to it.

Otherwise I would've imagined they would've nailed his *advertiser censored* to the wall by now .

Well, I emailed the cold case unit at the Colorado Springs PD. A detective kindly called me back to say that they've already looked at Newsome and he's not the guy. Quite a disappointment but not a huge surprise.

So back to putting on our thinking caps.

Interesting, ive never seen a wire hanger twisted around someone's neck as a weapon, let alone this happened 2x in the same area, and LE feels its not Newsome

I agree, Rich. It's hard to fathom. I suppose, though, that despite the efforts of human beings to come up with new and different ways of killing each other, there is nothing new under the sun.

ETA: The detective didn't tell me how they ruled Newsome out, but if I had to guess, I would say they found out he couldn't have been in Colorado at the time. JMO

I first heard about Darlene from her sister about seven or eight years ago. In googling her name, I got about 10 separate pieces of info. When I went to create this thread in April, half or more than half were gone. So with that in mind, I want to put as much information here in the hopes that if someone needs it, it’s available. I know there are rules against quoting too much from an article, but I hope that the mods will cut me a little slack under the circumstances.

Her name is listed in Army records as Darlene Depaula Krashoc. (At first I thought her middle name must be misspelled for St. Vincent DePaul, but there is a St. Francis DePaula. I do not know for sure what her middle name is.) She was born on August 22, 1966 in Maryland. She graduated from high school, probably in 1984. Darlene enlisted in the army and in 1987 was serving in the 73rd Maintenance Co. at Fort Carson as a mechanic (wheel vehicle repair). She was a Specialist E04.

On the night of March 16, 1987, she was seen at a nightclub called Shuffles at 1861 S. Academy Blvd. in Colorado Springs. She was last seen between midnight and 1 a.m. on what was actually March 17. At approximately 5:20 a.m., her nude or partially nude body (I’ve seen both descriptions) was found by two police officers on routine patrol in the parking lot behind the Korean Restaurant, which may also have been a nightclub, located at 2710 S. Academy Blvd. Although this would appear to be nine blocks away from Shuffles, a map doesn’t really reflect that, only that they are fairly close. I’m not sufficiently computer savvy to come up with a map to post (Help!). Both these clubs have gone out of business.

The Gazette article from May 25, 2010, states that, “An autopsy determined that Krashoc had been strangled with a coat hanger and leather thongs after being severely beaten, bitten, sexually assaulted. She may also have been thrown from a moving vehicle.” The article goes on to state that, “The murder baffled The FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit, which was unable to provide a psychological profile of the killer. In 1996, a killer who bit his victims was arrested on the East Coast and detectives sent plaster casts of the bite marks on Krashoc. It did not match.”

Also according to the Gazette article, “Krashoc’s mother, Betty, last spoke with her daughter a week before her death. Krashoc had changed from a soldier ready to re-enlist to a frightened woman ready to go AWOL to get away from Fort Carson, but wouldn’t tell her mother why.”

You can read the full Gazette article here:

As I’ve mentioned before, a DNA profile did not provide any matches in 2003.

I found one further internet item on Darlene which I will not link to here. It is not mainstream media, for one thing, and for another I’m pretty skeptical of the information it contains. If you google Darlene’s name you will probably find it.

ETA: Forgot to include contact info. The detective who has this case currently is Mike Montez. You can reach him at 719-444-7613, or by e-mail at CSPDColdCase@springsgov.com. You can remain anonymous and call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP (7867).

This has been a problem since the beginning! CID has always claimed to have an investigation going but I was picked up on an APB for driving Darlene's vehicle on the 17th. I was driving on base, in full uniform, and escorted (such a polite word) to the MP station where I sat for a bit before civilian police came to talk to me . I don't know how long we talked maybe 20 minutes but it could have been longer. I wasn't in a very good state of mind but I am POSITIVE Military didn't give a damn about Darlene. Specialist Krashoc AKA Krash.

I talked to CID a few years ago. for the first time, and they had no clue she and I met long before we joined the military together. That was just before they yanked her reward poster off the internet.

Wow, Private, thanks for posting! Do you have any thoughts on why her mother thought she was frightened and wanted to leave Fort Carson?

No~ I have no thoughts on that and have no recollection of her being afraid. The article says that it was about a week before and I know a week before Darlene's murder Ft Carson was preparing for training down in Trinidad. She was scheduled to be a part of that training mission and I thought she left that Friday but she showed up at my house that Sunday. They had her stay behind because she and another girl were responsible for the tool room and they had both of them scheduled to go down range and someone needed to stay behind for the skeleton crew. No one wanted to be in the field for weeks at a time so she was more then happy to stay behind.

Wow that is really good news! Hoping we'll see some justice for Darlene.

NO I don't guess you do...since you were running scared

I heard stories about all of them here; and everyone seemed to have alibi's; I did manage to talk to one of her friends and there
was an investigation going on; on post and she was implicated, but was later cleared. I have snooped around since I am close to
the scene where she was found. And what happened to the phony ID she had that nite she was killed..can anyone answer that; because I
read that she had a phony ID that night; but when she was found; she had an expired license. Any one know the real facts?

Didn't Colorado have prisoners that took care of horses...just a thought...but control I would surmise would be the issue
